Vicar of St Martin's, Hull

Please Note: The application deadline for this post has now passed.

Welcome! That's what the board outside our church says. We at St. Martins are a friendly and welcoming community of people. The different languages displayed on the board for welcome reflect the members of the church past and present, nationalities.

We have a desire to reach out to those in the community around us, and to be a hub, focal point for the area we are situated in. A legacy we have been left may enable us to go some way to achieving this.

Our single parish benefice is two miles west of the centre of Hull - the UK City of Culture in 2017!  This is an exciting time for our community. We are looking forward to begin the new phase in the life of St. Martins, and are waiting to see where God and our new incumbent will lead us.

Post Introduction

We are a Bible believing, evangelical church that has been encouraged by being part of the New Wine network.  We are a welcoming, relational community providing a haven for, and trying to meet, the needs of suffering people including those with mental illness, physical suffering and the homeless.

We have a desire to reach out to our community, socially and spiritually.  Visitors tell us we give a warm welcome.  There is a good sense of unity among our congregation, and attendance at our 9:30am Parish communion service averages 40 and growing, with a spread of ethnicity and age and consistent attenders.

We have been told that we are a generous church, but we are not wealthy (apart from a legacy). Since York Diocese introduced a freewill offering we have not only met our pledges but also surpassed them.

Regarding Issues of human sexuality, St. Martins holds to the biblical and traditional teaching on chastity and fidelity in personal relationships in a response to, and expression of, God's love for each one of us.

Role Responsibility

As a congregation we wish to see the five-fold ministries developed for the benefit of each other and the wider community, and to see a leader who is sensitive to the needs of people but will stand on the word of God when challenged.

We would also love to see children and youth work developed, working with young adults and family work, through which we would increasingly build more links with the community.

We are in the fortunate position of being left a large legacy from a past Reader, who expressed a desire to see it put to some building work but has left it up to the PCC to decide exactly how this will best be done.  We look to our new Incumbent to join us in praying how this money might be best used to further Gods kingdom.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for:

  • A mature Christian who holds fast to the Lordship of Christ and the authority of scripture and is prayerfully dependent on the Lord, (Tit 1v9, 1Thess 5v16-18).
  • A person who has a servant heart of Godly character showing the fruit of the Holy Spirit and is guided by the Holy Spirit (1Tim 4v12, 3v2-7, Gal 5v22-23, Jn16v33).
  • Someone who demonstrates a passion and commitment to telling those who don’t yet know him about Jesus Christ (Mt 28v19).
  • We would like an enabler, someone who can build ministries/teams and help to equip all members of the body of St. Martins for works of service (Eph 4v12, 1Cor3v10).

To sum up we would like someone who will partner with God through Jesus and in the power of the Holy Spirit in works, word and worship.
