Priest in Charge - St John and St James Orrell Hey and St Phillip’s Litherland

We are looking for a talented priest to lead a team of churches in the Litherland and Orrell Hey areas of North Liverpool. With a proposed team of three churches, each with a close working relationship, this appointment comes at a crucial and exciting time. The Priest in Charge will be expected to shape the structure and vision for the team leading towards establishing a Team Rector post. They will also oversee the appointment of another priest who will become the Team Vicar.

The Priest in Charge will be able to choose one of two vicarages in the area.

Post Introduction

The three churches are in predominately urban residential areas with a real mix of housing types matched by a strong community and family feel.  The churches have deep roots into the community. The area is handily located for Liverpool City Centre and the Sefton coast line. Church buildings across the team vary in character: St John and St James, in particular, benefits from a newly refurbished centre and St Philip’s was recently re-ordered.

The team benefits form a ministry team with a broad range of interests, skills and experience. These include a full time Children and Families Worker funded by the deanery. We also have one retired and one self-supporting priest, a number of Readers and Church Wardens. The group council is lively and forward thinking and have worked together on the parish profile.

There are many challenges but a strong desire to work together to serve the community and build a bigger church making a bigger difference in the local community.

Role Responsibility

The team is looking for a priest who will:

  • Enable us to grow in breadth and depth developing  a vision for growth
  • Encourage people to use their gifts in God’s service
  • Work collaboratively with our diverse leadership team
  • Help make the most of baptisms, weddings and funerals
  • Support children and families work, developing the mission to schools

The Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will have

  • An appreciation of different theological understandings
  • An ability to lead the church in  mission
  • A desire to embrace the vision of the Diocesan Bishop
  • An ability to lead change 
  • An ability to guide, support and encourage others on their faith journey
  • A warm welcoming approach with a strong sense of humour
