Vicar of St Mary & St Hugh, Old Harlow

This job has now expired

St Mary’s is a loving, caring and welcoming church with a heart for the community. We are an evangelical Anglican church, committed to being Word-fed and Spirit-led. We are excited at the opportunities for making Jesus known in our expanding parish. Our vision is to be a visible and welcoming family to all those moving into the new developments within our parish, with a desire to see more young families join us.

St Mary’s church is in a village environment located on the outskirts of Harlow in West Essex. We are a single church benefice.

The population of the Parish is set to double in 5 years with two large housing developments under way. Half of our church family live outside the Parish, with a few young families, but the majority of the congregation are more senior in age, although young at heart! We are blessed with a number of people who serve in lay ministry roles such as leading services, preaching and leading our sung worship.

There are 3 services each Sunday with the largest congregation (average 92) attending the 10.30 family service with evangelical / charismatic style worship.

There is already a significant partnership between Christian churches, across town and villages. The Harlow Deanery mission vision for 2025 specifies the key priorities for a new incumbent to focus mission outside the walls of the church. You will need to grow and foster lay ministry and enable Christian learning to equip us as a church and individuals for ministry and mission.

We want to:

  • develop our individual and corporate prayer life
  • be a nurturing church and develop our house groups further
  • be equipped to serve each other and to share the gospel
  • provide strategic leadership to grow our congregation in numbers and faith
  • encourage and equip individuals to grow in their faith and use of spiritual gifts
  • be an inspiring preacher and teacher, rooted in Scripture
  • be nurturing to help develop new and existing leaders within lay ministry
  • lead with passion and discernment, with a heart for pastoral care
  • be collaborative and a team player to fulfil the Deanery vision for mission
