Vicar of the Benefice of Lincoln St John the Baptist

This job has now expired
Sudbrooke Dr, Lincoln

At St John's we pride ourselves on being an outward looking church, where worship in the church building is important, however, our positive impact on the local community is of equal value.

St John’s serves Lincoln’s Ermine estate; the local population is approximately 10,000. The Ermine is a major 1950’s council estate in North Lincoln City, containing extensive social housing and is one of the ten most deprived parishes in Lincoln Diocese. The ward has the highest proportion of retired people in Lincoln; and a third of households are in fuel poverty.

We aim for all our services to be inclusive, from the Parish Eucharist where vestments are worn to the more informal services where we are rather more relaxed. There is a good balance of the traditional together with a more informal, family friendly style of worship, which is achieved through a regular pattern of varied services. We would encourage a collaborative approach to doing God’s work and welcome new ideas for planning, preparing and hosting worship whilst maintaining our High Church character.

We believe in strong community ties and as such our outreach work is a large part of who we are.

  • Ermine Music - Community Choir
  • Community Larder - Food Bank
  • Fortnightly Lunch Club
  • Eucharist Service in local residential homes
  • Strong ties with local schools and Youth Uniformed Services Groups
  • Christmas and Summer Community Fayre

If you would like to have an informal chat about us, please feel free to give our Church Warden, Phil Betts, a call on 07432654328.

We are not looking for perfection, nor are we looking for a clone of previous incumbents; we are, however, looking for someone who will become part of the fabric of our church and parish life.

We are not looking for someone to show us the road, more to travel the road with us and guide us along the journey.

Our new incumbent should be someone who:

  • Can embrace an inclusive Anglo-Catholic tradition.
  • Is a person of deep prayer and a heart for a deprived community.
  • Is someone who will involve themselves in all aspects of the church and community life and who will be an advocate and voice for this community.
  • Is flexible and have a good sense of humour, able to offer both formal and informal worship.
  • Is a good communicator and will seek to encourage people to develop their own ministries.
  • Is able to relate the Bible teachings intelligently to contemporary life.
  • Is prepared to work in a collaborative manner with the PCC and congregation, but who also has the strength of character to take an independent lead when necessary.
  • Is willing to bring new ideas whilst respecting the High Church traditions already developed within this parish.

A note from the Bishop of Grantham during an Episcopal Visitation 2017

"This is a church for the people and of the people - one of the nearest that I have encountered in Lincoln to having a 'liberation theology' sense of community
