Birmingham is the UK’s second city with the youngest urban population in one of the most lively and diverse regions. The Church of England Birmingham diocese, founded in 1905, is one of 41 dioceses in England. It covers an area of nearly 300 square miles, and includes parishes in the West Midlands including Birmingham and parts of Solihull, Sandwell, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.

Right at the heart of what we do there are over 187 Church of England places of worship with an average weekly attendance of 17,000 from a population of 1.5 million. In these churches are clergy and church-goers representing a wide scope of Church tradition and breadth of ethnicity. In addition we manage 155 residential properties for clergy housing.

1 Colmore Row in central Birmingham houses the diocesan and cathedral offices of the Church of England Birmingham. The offices act as a resource centre supporting the cathedral and the parishes of the diocese and their communities. It is here that the Finance Team is based.

We are looking for a part-time Finance Assistant to work with the Finance Manager and the full-time Finance Assistant who are responsible for the Diocesan Board of Finance (DBF) and other accounts.

  • DBF purchase ledger management including coding, processing of purchase invoices, liaison with budget holders over purchase order/invoice authorisations, drafting suggested monthly BACS listings;
  • Finance system housekeeping with respect to matching of cash and invoices on purchase ledger, closing down of unrequired purchase orders
  • Liaison with property department to ensure that the correct council tax is paid on clergy housing at the right time
  • Day to day accounting for the Malawi Fund
  • Weekly banking and petty cash recording
  • Provide reasonable assistance to the DBF Finance Manager as directed and on ad hoc projects.

The below are the criteria from which we will be shortlisting candidates for this role and you should evidence how you meet these in your application:

  • Must hold an AAT qualification or be training for AAT
  • Experience of dealing with charities and fund accounting would be desirable
  • Highly organised, focused and self-motivated
  • Ability to prioritise tasks to meet deadlines
  • Methodical approach with attention to detail to ensure accuracy of postings,
  • Team player in essentially a small team and willing to lend a hand where needed
  • “Can do“ attitude
  • Approachable style and manner
  • Customer focused
  • Ability to explain financial terms to non-accountants,such as budget holders
  • Highly IT literate, with excellent excel skills to maximise the use of data imports into the finance system
  • Be in sympathy with the ministry and mission of the Church of England

This is a part-time post: 21 hours per week, worked over three days to be negotiated

Salary: £14,545 (FTE £24,240)

Pension: Membership of the Church Workers Pension scheme with 12% employer contributions

Holidays: prorated from the full-time equivalent of 25 days per year and Bank Holidays, plus 3 additional Diocesan Discretionary Days

The post holder will report to the DBF Finance Manager
