Vicar of the Parish of Girlington, Heaton and Manningham, Bradford

We are seeking a team leader for this newly-created large parish close to the centre of Bradford. The parish’s population of 47,000 is richly diverse, with over two-thirds claiming to be Muslim in the 2011 census. The new vicar’s priorities will be to grow the number and depth of disciples of Jesus in the parish, develop greater lay leadership, increase the impact of the variety of existing community-facing ministries and to help the congregations to encourage and support each other.

The Vicar will be the senior Anglican priest in Girlington, Heaton and Manningham with responsibility for overall leadership of the leadership and staff teams. (S)he will also be the Training Incumbent for any curate deployed to the parish.

(S)he will:

  • be joyfully confident in their own identity in Christ and have a track record of growing confident disciples;
  • be energised by the prospect of building and leading a team of lay and ordained leaders;
  • be excited about life and ministry in a diverse inner-city community;
  • have an understanding and enthusiasm for mission beyond the worshipping community

There are five particular priorities for the incoming incumbent:

  • To work with the congregations of the four churches, as well as the missional community to grow them, working a ‘mixed economy’ of new forms of mission and worship alongside traditional ones and making the most of the range of cultures present within them.
  • To take lay discipleship to the next level, both in depth and in numbers, increasing people’s confidence in their own faith in Christ, and enabling them to share Christ’s love with winsome grace and love.
  • To encourage, equip and expand the team of leaders in the parish, thereby developing lay leadership in depth, numbers, and cultural diversity.
  • To widen and deepen the positive engagement of the existing ministries engaging the local communities in entrepreneurial and creative ways - both personally as an individual and also with the congregations - to increase their impact in addressing the different forms of poverty in the parish.
  • To continue the work of deepening the mutual support and encouragement between the four churches, working with the new governance structures and potential for different approaches to worship and mission to realise more of the potential synergies between them.

The parish are seeking someone :

  • Who has a proven track record of commitment to and delivery of church growth
  • Has experience in the typical range of Church of England parish ministry
  • Has a track record of growing the gifts and confidence of God’s people

Within the Bradford Episcopal Area, part of our strategy is to create larger parishes, usually with a number of churches or congregations, under the leadership of a vicar working with a team of colleagues. In doing so, we want to maximise the potential for a wider range of gifts to be present in a leadership team, and also to avoid the potential problems of isolation and burnout for both clergy and lay leaders. With smaller congregations, this approach also enables the creation of a better critical mass for new initiatives in mission. The new parish of Girlington, Heaton and Manningham, which came into being on 1 July 2018, is an example of this approach being put into practice. It is also a very important parish within the Bradford Episcopal Area, and has a significant profile in the Diocese of Leeds and nationally for its work in “presence and engagement”.

Formed from the historic parishes of St Philip’s Girlington, St Paul’s Manningham, St Barnabas Heaton and St Martin’s Heaton, this very large parish of over 47,000 people contains some of the most deprived areas in the country. Housing includes poor-quality private-rented homes, a large council estate, large family homes and semi-rural properties. Over two-thirds of the population is Muslim, mainly from Bangladesh and the Mirpur area of Pakistan. 71% are of Asian origin and 22% white (of whom significant numbers are from Eastern Europe). There are large numbers of young people in the parish (over half the population is under the age of 30 and one third under 16), while less than 9% are over 65. Hence there are many schools – including two Church of England primary schools, numerous private Islamic Schools, Bradford Grammar School and Bradford Girls Grammar School. Considerable effort has gone into developing ministry in many of these schools.

Our vision as the Diocese is about confident clergy equipping confident Christians to live and tell the good news of Jesus Christ. For all of our appointments we are seeking clergy who have a joyful and confident faith which has inspired a track record of church growth. We therefore want to develop confident disciples and leaders in Girlington, Heaton and Manningham, who can reach out into the parish in forms of mission which both win new disciples for Jesus and also bring transformation and hope to those affected by the many forms of poverty experienced locally. In doing so, the opportunity is there to make the most of the different gifts and resources of the four churches so that they can achieve more together in mission and ministry than they could on their own.

In addition to the vicar, the leadership team currently comprises an Associate Vicar, Curate, Self-Supporting Priest, and 4 Readers. There is a vacancy for another part-time (3 days a week plus Sundays) Associate Vicar. There are also three part-time lay staff: a Project Co-ordinator & Outreach Worker (18 hours a week at St Paul’s and 5 at St Barnabas); a new arrivals worker; and a youth worker (Sunday mornings and Tuesdays after-school at St Paul’s). In addition, there are three retired clergy with permission to officiate. A new missional community has been birthed, rooted in St Paul’s vicarage and Strategic Development Funding will enable the appointment of 2 part-time Missional Community Apprentices for this community in July 2019 for 2 years, and another part-time 2 year post in July 2021.

The Deanery of Inner Bradford, now two years old, is comprised of parishes similar to Girlington, Heaton and Manningham. Most of them are experimenting with new patterns of mission and ministry as they grapple with what it means to be the Church of England in the presence of large Muslim populations. Hence the new vicar will find a group of creative and supportive colleagues in the Deanery chapter, all of whom will be deeply familiar with the joys and challenges that each other faces. The new vicar of Girlington, Heaton and Manningham will therefore be expected to work with a spirit of generosity in sharing wisdom and insights about ministry within the Inner Bradford Deanery, across the Episcopal Area and Diocese of Leeds, and also nationally.

Leading your Church into Growth (LYCiG) and Jesus Shaped People (JSP) are two excellent initiatives born in the Bradford Episcopal Area and now adopted in other Dioceses. They have enabled church growth and developed confidence in congregations. Newly appointed clergy are required to book onto a LYCiG conference within 12 months of their appointment, and ideally to attend with some people from their parish. Experienced mentors and training are available to new incumbents to make the most of LYCiG and JSP.
