Effective communications are vital to our work, particularly as we seek to pursue our strategic goals to: Reach those we currently don’t; Grow in discipleship, influence and numbers; underpinned by achieving Sustainable finances.

A number of substantial new initiatives are under way, making this a challenging and exciting time for Communications in spreading news and engendering support.

This post offers a wonderful opportunity to make a significant contribution by sharing in our important work, as well as to develop your aptitude and passion for communications work.

Aiming to provide clear, accurate information and positive messages about our work, the remit of the Communications function includes:

  • Sourcing, telling, sharing and exploiting good news within the diocese on a range of platforms and channels
  • Developing and managing systems for sharing information and resources throughout the diocese and its administration
  • Creating and supporting imaginative campaigns to promote key themes and initiatives
  • Supporting and educating parishes (sometimes including church schools) in their communications and media work
  • Providing advice and support on digital and social media
  • Advising on house style and visual identity
  • Working proactively with print and broadcast media to tell good news stories
  • Responding to media enquiries
  • Professional PR support at times of crisis or high levels of media interest

Working closely with our Director of Communications and Parish Resourcing, your main priorities will be to promote and share news, information and resources throughout the Diocese, to participate in monitoring and sharing positive media coverage of our parishes and the Diocese, to maintain and develop our website and our use of social media, and to provide creative support to other teams in their work.

  • Day-to-day monitoring and maintenance of our presence on social media and its long-term development.
  • Day-to-day editing and development of our diocesan website.
  • Monitoring and sharing online positive media coverage of parishes and the Diocese.
  • Sharing responsibility for internal communications within the Diocese through electronic mailings, bulletins etc.
  • Sharing in planning and delivering local training for parishes in use of social media and other communication skills
  • Providing creative support to other teams in their work.

Motivation, aptitude and passion for a role in communications are as important to us as relevant experience.

You will need great communication skills, an instinct for the optimum use of different media platforms, an eye for a good picture or video, the ability to identify and tell engaging stories and to write good and accurate content.

You will have excellent IT skills (including all MS Office applications and web-based packages such as MailChimp, HootSuite and SurveyMonkey), the aptitude to adapt them in changing circumstances, and a willingness to work in print as well as online.

You will share our values, have a desire to serve the church in the Diocese of York, and show an ability to relate to faith communities from a variety of traditions.

Extending from the River Tees to the River Humber, and from around the A1 road to the incomparable Yorkshire coast, the area is home to around 1.4 million people.
