We have an exciting role assisting the Director in promoting the policies of the statutory Diocesan Board of Education in Church of England schools by providing advice and support to headteachers, staff, governors of and clergy working within these schools.

The post holder should be willing to undertake training as and when required.

The post holder may work from home but must spend at least half a day each week in the office at Church House, Hove for the purpose of accountability and feedback. They should expect to spend a considerable proportion of time travelling to schools or parishes with the post requiring some work in the evening and, far less often, at weekends.

This will relate to overall educational standards and pupil outcomes, Religious Education, Collective Worship and the distinctive character of Church schools across the diocese.

This post holder will liaise nationally and manage locally the SIAMS inspection process

training course for denominational inspectors of Religious Education, Collective Worship and Christian ethos in Church of England schools.

  • To oversee, commission and lead Religious Education support, as necessary, in liaison with the relevant Local Authority (LA) and the Department for Education (DfE), for each Church school needing to improve significantly the educational attainments of its pupils.
  • To advise governors, headteachers and teaching staff on the development of the distinctive Christian character and the promotion of spiritual, moral, social and cultural development in the life of their schools.
  • To advise governors, head teachers and curriculum leaders with regard to developing, implementing and evaluating policies for all aspects of Religious Education and Collective Worship, liaising closely with the Department for Education, Local Authorities and SACREs about related issues.
  • To manage arrangements for the denominational inspection of C of E schools.
  • To identify Church school training needs with regard to RE, Christian Distinctiveness and SIAMS by evaluating the impact of past professional development activities; contribute to the annual training programme (in relation to the post holders specific areas of responsibility) for Church and community schools; and to lead courses that take full account of school needs and new developments and expectations in education both nationally and locally.
  • As an officer of the Board of Education, to be responsible with the Director of Education for the implementation of the policies of the Board and the work of its sub groups.
  • To undertake such other duties as may be required by the Director of Education and to work at all times in close partnership with all other members of the Schools Team and other Church House Departments.

The post holder will be a qualified and highly skilled teacher with substantial management experience able to demonstrate:

  • A strong personal commitment to the Church's mission and a clear understanding and vision about the central role of Church schools in serving local children and families.
  • A commitment to embedding the Church of England Vision for Education in our diocesan schools.
  • The necessary interpersonal skills for the establishment of good relationships with head teachers, governors, clergy, local authority officers, DCAT and Church House staff.
  • Successful experience of securing rapid and lasting improvement in teaching and learning and in the leadership and management of schools.
  • Knowledge and experience of good practice in Religious Education and Collective Worship, in the development of spirituality in children and in the planning and delivery of high quality, practical training for adults.
  • Strong knowledge and experience of the SIAMS process and its current structure.
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to articulate a vision for rounded academic and personal outcomes for pupils through a distinctively Christian education.
  • The ability to analyse policies, information and data, particularly relating to RE, Christian Distinctiveness and SIAMS. This will then lead to the effective presentation of information with recommendations for future improvements
  • High level and up to date IT skills.
  • To be self-motivated with a strong work ethic having the ability to work creatively and determinedly on his/her own initiative
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks, risks and opportunities.

The Diocese of Chichester is the Church of England in Sussex. It almost exactly covers the counties of East and West Sussex and the City of Brighton and Hove, stretching for nearly a hundred miles (160km) along the south coast of England. The Diocese of Chichester Board of Education (DBE) is to oversee the work of all Church of England state funded schools in the Diocese. Currently there are 158 Church of England schools in the diocese – 60 have voluntary aided status and 98 have voluntary controlled status. Of these seven are church secondary schools and there are nine academies. Educating C37,000 pupils and have extended contact with their families, a demographic that is often missing.
