Head of Vocations, Ministry Division

The Church of England has set itself a target of increasing by 50% vocations to the priesthood by 2020-2021 and to maintain the higher number beyond that. Through a well-developed strategy for Growing Vocations to Ministry good progress is being made towards this target, but there is a need to maintain focused attention on the goal to provide high quality ministry across the church and to achieve greater diversity among the candidates coming forward.

Through national initiatives such as the Great Vocations Conversation, the Head of Vocations will seek to encourage activity in local settings, such as parishes, chaplaincies and schools that can contribute to an increase in vocations to ordained and lay ministry. They will oversee the creation of good quality resources that help improve the quality of those local conversations. They will encourage and facilitate the sharing of good practice.

This work sits alongside and supports the work of encouraging people to live out their Christian faith in all aspects of their daily lives.

Similarly, this work complements the work of advising bishops with regard to discernment and selection for ordained ministry, which is currently managed by a team within Ministry Division.

This is primarily an outward facing role, which might suit someone with experience in vocations work, communications, marketing, or the charity sector. It needs someone who has a passion for enthusing and encouraging others.

The post holder will..

  • Own the strategy for Growing Vocations to Ministry: drawing on the expertise of others through the formal structures of the Ministry Council to coordinate regular review of the strategy, and to contribute to the development of the Council’s overall strategy.
  • Lead and manage the programme of activities and national interventions to increase the number of ordinands entering training by 50% in 2020 and an increase in the diversity of ordinands. They will monitor progress against the agreed aspirations and numerical targets set by the Ministry Council.
  • Line mange the Vocations Projects and Events Officer.
  • Lead the national programme of communications to reach potential candidates for ministry through multiple channels, and through creating partnerships, and to ensure its excellence.
  • Motivate diocesan vocations and discernment teams to set aspirations and change practice to increase the flow and diversity of ordinands by providing management information, inspiration, consultancy and opportunities to share good practice.
  • Monitor the output of the dioceses’ work in encouraging vocations to lay and ordained ministry and develop systems to monitor outcomes of diocesan and national work. To use this monitoring information to provide regular reports to the Ministry Council.
  • Liaise with colleagues and other organisations to ensure that high quality Initial Ministerial Education and Continuing Ministerial Development is available to motivate and equip lay and ordained ministers to nurture vocations.
  • Lead the national programme of work to increase the diversity of candidates for ministry and to manage the Minority Ethnic Vocations Officer and Young Vocations Officer with the aim of reaching the aspirations and targets of the Council
  • Hold the vision and ensure the success of the business plan for the Church of England Ministry Experience Scheme in line with the scheme review and to oversee the work of the work of the Ministry Experience Scheme Manager the implementation of the plan and the relationship with the dioceses and funding partners
  • Work with others on the development of a data management system for enquirers moving into the vocations process
  • Liaise with lay ministry constituencies such as communities of Readers, lay pioneers, the Church Army and religious (new and established monastic communities) and with dioceses and, in line with “Serving Together”, provide national opportunities for communicating about vocations to lay ministries and religious life.
  • Liaise with the Director of Evangelism and Discipleship and manage the area of overlap with “Setting God’s People Free” in encouraging a sense of vocation for all members of the Church of England
  • Be a member of the Senior Management Team of the Division and attend the weekly SMT meeting
  • Keep in touch with developments and best professional practice in vocational and recruitment work through ecumenical colleagues, para-church agencies and business/industry contacts

  • Can speak confidently of their own Christian faith and vocation.
  • Can demonstrate experience in managing multiple workstreams and stakeholders while retaining a clear grasp both of the bigger picture and the necessary detail.
  • Works well in a team, is self-reliant and understands their own strengths and preferences.
  • Has experience in line managing others, setting targets and encouraging high performance.
  • Is enthusiastic, with a “can do” attitude, imagination and flexibility.
  • Can write engagingly with sensitivity to varied audiences.
  • Can work with others to create well designed, appealing and imaginative communications.
  • Can make the connections between raw data and the bigger picture.
  • Is confident in addressing a variety of audiences and can use a variety of media to enhance their communication as appropriate.
  • Understands the importance of diversity and is passionate about achieving equality of access to all, recognising that this may require particular and targeted interventions.
