The benefice of Vicar of St Peter, Hale with St Elizabeth, Ashley is situated on the southern flank of the Manchester conurbation, and was previously in the historic County of Cheshire.

Hale is a prosperous suburban parish, and Ashley is a smaller, mixed rural village.

The overall churchmanship is central and flexible, with a wide range of services and parish activities. St Peter’s has an excellent robed choir for its main services.

Both church buildings are in good repair and have been impressively refurbished in recent years. St Peter’s has an excellent set of parish rooms, the St Peter Centre, next to the Church. The well-maintained Vicarage is nearby.

Overall the parishes are looking for a strong but collaborative priest, who will co-ordinate and lead the strong and varied life of the benefice. A fuller outline of the personal qualities which have been identified by the parishes is in the person specification.

The parish is in the strong and supportive Deanery of Bowdon. An excellent Church Primary School serves the parishes of Hale and Bowdon, and the area has good overall amenities and transport links.

Our vision for the two parishes

The vision that we have for our two parishes is summarised in the following aims – we want our next Vicar to be someone who will embrace these and focus on delivering this vision for our parishes.

  • To encourage growth development of various gifts of parishioners of all ages
  • To nurture and support the Churches’ commitment to youth, young people and young families
  • To cherish and be sensitive to the wide variety of needs of the Churches and the wider community
  • To lead, support, encourage, motivate and manage our lay teams
  • To be committed to personal training and development and that of others (returning to being a training parish)
  • To preach with clarity, brevity and with contemporary relevance
  • To share in and encourage the building of a fresh, (possibly radical) vision for the future
  • To provide a spiritual lead to the parishes in discipleship, witness and worship

It is expected that the new incumbent will demonstrate central churchmanship while adopting an open and flexible approach and initially maintaining the variety of services currently on offer. He or she will have an inspirational faith and will provide a spiritual lead to the parishes in discipleship and worship.

St Peter’s Church Hale and St Elizabeth’s Church Ashley seek an incumbent who can build upon the achievements of recent years and the PCCs of both parishes have considered carefully the qualities that they believe the person who next leads our parishes should possess, so as best to fit with the with the welcoming and inclusive nature of our churches, and expressed their views that the person should be someone who has the following qualities and is called to lead us in a renewed vision for God’s kingdom in Hale and Ashley.

  • We believe that first and foremost, the Vicar should be a people person, someone who is enthusiastically collaborative seeking to engage everyone in the parish.
  • The person should have an ability to prayerfully to discern gifts in others, encourage those who already share their gifts – and inspire others.
  • Strong communication skills are essential, with an emphasis on being able to listen empathetically.
  • The person will need to be resilient, independent, dynamic, outgoing, energetic and diplomatic with, of course, a good sense of humour and fun.
  • They should possess pastoral gifts, with an understanding of the importance of the sacraments, especially to those unable to attend church.
  • The person should have a focus on mission and an ability to relate to and reach out to the wider community outside the church family, both locally and further afield.
  • The person should be able to bring experience from previous work in the wider world and from their calling of growing, supporting and encouraging teams.
  • An awareness of wider church initiatives is required.
  • He or she should be used to managing the issues that come with large parishes.

The Diocese covers an area of 1025 square miles, approximately the old Victorian County of Chester, including parts which subsequently became absorbed into Merseyside and Greater Manchester. The Rivers Mersey and Tame approximately delineate the boundary with Liverpool and Manchester. There are areas of dense urban population, mainly in the north, stretching from Birkenhead to East Manchester. There are prosperous suburban regions of West and South Wirral, Chester and south of Manchester, with a mainly rural heartland, bounded by the Derbyshire Pennines and the Welsh Border. The overall population is around 1.6 million.

There are three Bishops: the Bishop of Chester Peter Forster, the Bishop of Birkenhead Keith Sinclair and the Bishop of Stockport Libby Lane.

The Cathedral for the Diocese is in Chester.

The Diocese is divided into two archdeaconries: Chester covering the western half and Macclesfield the eastern, each with nine deaneries. There are 273 parishes, about 100 of which can be described as rural. Compared with many dioceses, there are few teams, and few multi-parish benefices. There are approximately 231 stipendiary clergy. The ministry of Readers and Pastoral Workers is important, with over 400 licensed. The role of self-supporting ministers is increasing, with over 80 in post at present.

Roughly speaking, the Archdeaconry of Macclesfield covers that part of the diocese to the east of the M6, plus the area around Crewe and Nantwich. The Archdeaconry of Chester covers the rest of the diocese to the west of the M6. Each archdeaconry has a broad mix of urban and rural parishes. The Archdeacon of Chester lives in Chester, and the Archdeacon of Macclesfield lives in Congleton. Both now work from Church House, Daresbury.
