This role is an exciting opportunity to be part of an innovative project driving forwards a novel partnership approach to provide help and support to places of worship where bats are having a negative impact on historic fabric and the use of the building.

A partnership of five organisations (Natural England, Church of England’s Church Buildings Council, Bat Conservation Trust, Historic England, Churches Conservation Trust) led by Natural England, has been successful in its Bats in Churches project application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) Heritage Grants funding stream.

The project now needs 3 experienced Engagement Officers to help deliver the Activity Plan and represent the Bats in Churches project at our 102 project churches.

The Engagement Officers will form part of a small team reporting directly to the Project Manager and working closely with the Training and Survey and Communications Officers, representing the project at churches within their geographic area.

We are looking for 3 innovative and enthusiastic individuals with experience of community engagement, to work in the following locations :

  • London base (Home-worker)
  • West Midlands/Midlands base (Home-worker)
  • Norwich base (Norwich Diocesan Office)

Working to the activity plan, you will bring together churches, communities and bats in this ground breaking project. With strong diplomacy and relationship management skills, you will be responsible for establishing rapport and trust with church communities and communicating positively with a diverse range of partners.

You will demonstrate initiative and resilience with the ability to plan, manage and deliver successfully against project targets.

Summary:

The Bats in Churches (BiC) project aims are :

  • Develop and deliver innovative techniques and systems to better manage the impacts of bats (in churches and more widely) and make this information available to all.
  • Ensure church communities are better resourced and more empowered to manage their particular situations.
  • Ensure bat colonies that depend on churches are better managed and less threatened.
  • Reduce the physical and social impacts caused by bats at the most severely affected churches (e.g. damage from droppings and urine).
  • Develop the skills of volunteers and professionals enabling them to more effectively assist church communities and safely manage bat populations found in churches.
  • Engage wider communities so that new groups of people will engage with and learn about bats, church buildings and their communities.

The Role :

  • Work in a co-ordinated way with the 2 other BiC Engagement Officers to deliver the BiC Activity Plan at the churches within your area, starting with the first set of 20 church project plans.
  • Gain greater understanding of the communities and audiences around these churches to develop and adapt the Activity Plan to maximise the benefits to people and communities in line with the project objectives and within budget.
  • Work with the Communications Officer and Interpretation consultant to produce, agree and design interpretation materials as identified in the Interpretation Strategy and Activity Plan and to fit the needs of the communities and people you will be working with, including locally sourced content.
  • Research, write and consult with churches to produce the activity parts of the church project plans for a further set of ~20 churches per year on a rolling basis so that ultimately all 102 churches have plans written and executed.
  • Work with the Training & Survey Officer and local communities to help deliver a set of training activities across our project churches. This may involve help to build relationships, identify local training needs and co-ordinate delivery via church networks.
  • Report all volunteer activity, details and feedback to the training and survey officer for reporting purposes.
  • Facilitate community engagement days and school workshops in collaboration with church PCCs.
  • Ensure education and engagement activities and interpretation for communities, schools and new audiences are built into the church project plans
  • Keep in regular contact with the other Engagement officers and provide regular joint progress updates to the Project Manager.
  • Keep all stakeholders in the wider group up to date with development of the project.
  • Early identification of risks and issues.
  • Remain willing to work flexibly and to undertake such other duties in relation to the project as the Project Manager and/or Steering Group may reasonably require.

Essential

Skills/Aptitudes:

  • Ability to use clear and appropriate language, communication styles and techniques that engage your audience,
  • Ability to identify, empathise, and successfully engage with a diverse range of partners and stakeholder groups from local communities, as well as the natural and historic environment sectors.
  • Ability to plan, manage and deliver your workload in line with agreed targets and deadlines.
  • Competent in the use of IT systems and software packages.

Knowledge/Experience:

  • Experience of effective collaborative working with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
  • Proven experience of successful community engagement
  • Experience of developing and delivering heritage or environmental learning experiences.
  • Relevant experience of conflict resolution/ used to dealing with difficult situations

Personal Attributes:

  • Sympathetic understanding of the purposes of churches as centres of Christian worship and mission.

Circumstances:

  • Willing to regularly travel to churches in remote/rural locations
  • A clean driving licence and car in good working condition

Desirable

Knowledge/Experience:

  • Knowledge of the national curriculum in science and history.
  • Experience of working with a wide range of people.
  • Consultation and evaluation skills.
  • Basic awareness of:
    • political context of the bats in churches issue
    • research work around bats in churches
    • issues experienced by church communities in maintaining their historic buildings
  • Experience of using social and traditional media for community engagement.
  • Knowledge/experience of the use of church buildings
