We are now looking for an Associate Vicar to enhance our ministry team with the primary responsibility of heading up the ministry of young people, from babes in arms through to twenty-somethings. There is an abundance of raw material for you to work with!

We are a thriving, inclusive, multi-generational congregation in a cosmopolitan, children friendly, suburban parish, blessed with two fantastic churches that have recently been renovated.

Please note we have a policy in Southwark Diocese that to be appointed to an incumbent status post, a priest must normally have served a stipendiary title in an Anglican church in the British Isles, or, following a Candidates Panel for ministers of other Churches and Priests from other Anglican Provinces, has met the Adviser’s recommendations for appointment to posts of incumbency status, set out in a report to the diocesan Bishop.

We look for someone who is:

• A collaborative and team worker who can inspire and work with volunteers

• A priest of grounded faith, able to lead service in the catholic tradition as well as more informally

• Able to relate well with children and young people

• Experienced in using social media in a church context

The post is fully funded for five years with local accommodation and full stipend (incumbent level) and pension included

  • To support the vicar and the PCC in furthering the mission of God in this parish.
  • To take the lead on the parish’s provision for young people, from early years through to the twenties, for example in:
    • Welcome to babies and children brought for baptism and their families
    • Nurturing congregation members with young children
    • Ensuring spiritual provision for primary age children, including fostering the children’s choir and admission to communion classes
    • To develop links and relationships with local schools and the uniformed groups
    • Developing provision for secondary age children with appropriate activities
    • Providing opportunities for spiritual growth for people in their twenties, who are typically single and/or child-free
  • These activities are all ongoing in the parish as it stands. However, they need more vision, encouragement and support
  • To share in responsibility for conducting occasional offices in the parish and some traditional Sunday services
  • To participate in the life of the wider church (e.g. deanery and diocese), as opportunity allows.
  • Collaborative and a good team worker, who can inspire and work with volunteers
  • A Christian of grounded faith with deep spiritual roots comfortable with leading services both in the catholic tradition of the Church of England and in more informal ways
  • Able to relate well to people on the edge of church
  • Experience in using social media well in a church context
  • Experience of relating well both to children of all ages and their parents/ carers
  • Someone with both vision to see and perseverance to implement

St Andrew’s and St Mark’s, Surbiton is a parish with both a growing congregation and a growing number of activities. While we have a fully engaged congregation with significant amounts of lay participation and leadership, we believe we have come to a point where, to achieve the next stage of our growth, we need an associate priest in addition to the vicar (and, at times, a curate).
