We are seeking two half time vicars for the Maghull and Melling Team – one with oversight for Third Age Mission, the other for Children and Families Mission. This profile focuses on the role with oversight for Third Age Mission.

The Maghull and Melling team was established in 2009 with four parishes that cover a broad range of traditional and modern Anglicanism. Appointed in 2017, the Team Rector has worked to discern and develop a vision for the area. The new team is a result of that discernment. And all members will work collaboratively with others involved in ministry

The Team Vicar for Third Age Mission will focus on the active retired and elderly frail.

We have a housing allowance and a possibility for one of the vicars to live in a four bedroom house (if needed)

The modern town of Maghull and Melling village are in a semi rural and suburban area to the North of Liverpool. Both combine settled populations with a number of new housing developments that bring new people. It’s a mixed income area with most travelling to work across the North West.

The four parishes making up the area are St Andrew’s and St Thomas’ with traditional buildings and Green Park St James’ and St Peter’s who have more modern buildings. The profile explains each location in more detail. The patterns of worship vary across the churches and congregations and include evangelical and middle of the road Anglicanism, with some openness to a more charismatic style of worship.

The Team Vicar for Third Age Mission will have a pioneering role focussing on developing mission to the active retired and frail elderly communities across the team. They will be looking to develop new worshipping communities from within that age group, to grow new leaders as well as working with the pastoral team, readers and retired clergy. They will also have oversight of the team’s funeral bereavement, pastoral and residential care ministries.

Maghull and Melling is ideally suited for visiting Liverpool and has easy access to North Wales, the Lake District and many of the attractions of the North West.

The team is looking for a priest who will:

  • identify opportunities for mission to the Third Age community
  • make the most of opportunities presented by funerals, retirement homes and sheltered housing.
  • have a pioneering outlook
  • work strategically and collaboratively with others in the team
  • be able to grow and develop others into leadership roles.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • strong leadership skills
  • good listening skills
  • a passion for working with the Third Age
  • sensitivity when dealing with change
  • a strong pastoral instinct
  • good time management skills

For many years we have been working to achieve growth in our diocese. We have used different ways to express this but the aim and direction of travel has remained the same – consistent with the whole of the Church of England. When Bishop Paul was installed he adopted our growth agenda refreshing it by saying ‘we are asking God for a bigger church so we can make a bigger difference; more people knowing Jesus more justice in the world’

This is how we express our mission.

We think we will achieve this mission if we have

100 new congregations
1,000 new leaders
10,000 disciples

to help us do this we are calling every worshipping Christian in our diocese to

  • Sign up to the Bishop of Liverpool’s rule of life which will encourage and support us to Read, Learn, Pray, Give, Serve, Tell
  • bring 1 friend into the regular worshipping and serving life of the church (bring one friend)
  • do 10 acts of service or find 10 new points of connection beyond the walls of the church (do ten things)“
