Christ Church Aughton is a thriving church in the evangelical tradition. We are seeking a vicar to help us build on what has been achieved while moving us to the next phase of our journey with Christ.

“The beacon on the hill”, Christ Church sits overlooking Ormskirk in the North of our diocese and the building can be seen from miles around. We are a warm, welcoming family and we are active in in serving the community. Our vicar will find a strong PCC and plenty of volunteer help. We have good links with uniformed activities and a strong programme of youth activities.

Our vicar will have a large, comfortable vicarage a short walk from the church.

Closing Date: 12th November 2018
Interviews: 26th November 2018

Christ Church, Aughton is a strong evangelical church believing in the authority of scripture and the importance of community. They offer a combination of traditional and contemporary worship seeking to balance the tensions between the two styles. They are extremely active in the wider community through the support of Ormskirk Together, the local food bank, debt advice and street pastors. They are also proactive in creating opportunities to witness (including this year’s Bless Fest). The church links well to its local school and the University of the Third Age.

As well as the Grade 2 listed church building they have a purpose built ministry centre which provides a base for many local groups. It also includes Café Vista a well-run popular community café. The church has three readers and a strong ministry team as well as potential for a curate. They are concerned to reach to the community but want to develop better stepping stones from their outreach to the church. They are a well-resourced church that seeks to resource other churches.

The church is looking for someone who can help shape and move the direction of the church as they seek to reach out.

Aughton is a pleasant, leafy residential area on the outskirts of the market town of Ormskirk in West Lancashire. The town has a population of 24,000 (8,000) in Aughton and is home to the expanding Edge Hill University. Aughton is ideally suited for visiting Liverpool and has easy access to the North Wales, the Lake District and many of the attractions of the North West.

The team is looking for a priest who will:

  • hold a vision and shape their strategic direction
  • support, encourage and enable creative thinking around using talents and resources
  • reach out to the wider community
  • understand and respond to all ages
  • establish and nurture links with schools and young people.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • strong leadership and collaborative skills
  • good pastoral skills
  • strong managerial and administrative skills
  • sensitivity when dealing with change
  • ability to lead in mission and evangelism.

For many years we have been working to achieve growth in our diocese. We have used different ways to express this but the aim and direction of travel has remained the same – consistent with the whole of the Church of England. When Bishop Paul was installed he adopted our growth agenda refreshing it by saying ‘we are asking God for a bigger church so we can make a bigger difference; more people knowing Jesus more justice in the world’

This is how we express our mission.

We think we will achieve this mission if we have

100 new congregations
1,000 new leaders
10,000 disciples

to help us do this we are calling every worshipping Christian in our diocese to

  • Sign up to the Bishop of Liverpool’s rule of life which will encourage and support us to Read, Learn, Pray, Give, Serve, Tell
  • bring 1 friend into the regular worshipping and serving life of the church (bring one friend)
  • do 10 acts of service or find 10 new points of connection beyond the walls of the church (do ten things)
