The Housing Surveyor provides support to the Chartered Building Surveyors and Director and works collaboratively within the Property Services team to provide a high quality, client-focused surveying and property management service across the 320 clergy houses in the Diocese of Exeter.

The Property Services Team has an excellent reputation and oversees the repair, maintenance and improvement of the 320 clergy houses across the diocese. It also works with external agents to oversee the use and management of 2,000 acres of glebe land. The Property team also provides professional building and financial support to 134 Church of England schools and academies, including a fee-earning property consultancy service.

The Housing Surveyor provides support to the Chartered Building Surveyors and Director and works collaboratively within the Property Services team to provide a high quality, client-focused surveying and property management service for clergy housing. The work includes:

  • Site visits and oversight during the course of planned building works projects specified by the Chartered Building Surveyors.
  • Tendering and oversight of energy efficiency measures and building adaptations to reduce the clergy housing carbon footprint.
  • Inspection, diagnosis, specification and instruction of reactive repairs.
  • Undertaking measured surveys and production of CAD drawings for the refurbishment and improvement of the housing portfolio.

Undertaking a variety of associated duties to support the work of the Property Team.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • HNC/HND qualification in Building and Construction, or an equivalent qualification

Desirable

  • Relevant Degree or diploma

Experience

Essential

  • Either proven experience in building or surveying related work, or demonstrable desire to develop in this area

Technical

Essential

  • Understanding of building design and construction types and defects
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation
  • Good IT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Attention to detail and excellent information and data management skills

Desirable

  • User knowledge of current CAD software – training can be provided for the right candidate

  • Ensure all health and safety instructions are followed and that care is taken to ensure safety for self and colleagues, reporting concerns immediately
  • Sensitive to the different cultures, traditions and activities within the Church and maintain a consistent approach to clergy and non-clergy matters
  • Understand how the belief systems which shape the life of the Church may affect safeguarding work in Church of England
  • Commitment to anti-discriminatory practices within the Church of England’s legal context

Desirable

  • Understanding of the Church of England, its parochial system and the wider organisation of the Diocese

Personal Requirements

Essential

  • Supportive of the aims and ethos of the Diocese of Exeter and of the mission and ministry of the Church of England
  • A full driving licence and willingness to travel across Devon
  • Willing to be on call for occasional out of hours emergencies
