The Bishop of Manchester is looking to appoint a committed and collaborative priest as Archdeacon of Bolton & Salford who will be able to provide excellent support and leadership at this exciting time for our diocese.

Manchester Diocese has an inspiring vision for 2030 and we’re making good progress towards achieving this with the development of ambitious new programmes, all designed to release new missional energy and creativity. We are also making fundamental changes to the way we work together with the streamlining of our deanery structures, the appointment of full-time Area Deans and the launch of our new mission communities. The successful candidate will be someone with experience of the challenges of leading and managing change and be creative in encouraging new forms of mission and ministry. They will have worked in deprived communities and be committed to diversity, inclusion and racial justice.

  • To share with the bishops in developing, communicating and implementing the vision and strategy for the diocese.
  • In partnership with the Suffragan Bishop, to exercise a ministry of support and encouragement towards the Area Deans and Deanery Lay Chairs of the archdeaconry.
  • To be creative in supporting new forms of mission and ministry within the archdeaconry, working closely with the Area Dean.
  • To assist the Diocesan and Suffragan Bishops in the pastoral care of clergy, other licensed ministers and their families and carry out Ministerial Development Reviews.
  • As an executive member of the Diocesan Mission and Pastoral Committee, to oversee processes of pastoral reorganisation in the archdeaconry
  • In consultation with the Bishop’s Leadership Team, to take the lead in the process surrounding the appointment of priests to vacant benefices, liaising with the parishes concerned.
  • To enable parishes to operate effectively, especially through building relationships with churchwardens and being responsible for their training and support.
  • To share and lead public worship in the parishes of the archdeaconry, especially during vacancies and on other diocesan occasions.
  • To provide visible leadership in promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of the life of the archdeaconry.
  • To work with the Diocesan Board of Education to promote good governance and work with schools in the archdeaconry.
  • To fulfil the statutory roles of an Archdeacon.
