We are a single evangelical parish within the Church of England, looking for someone committed to holding out the hope of Jesus to our vibrant community through faithful bible teaching, and sharing our passion for serving the spiritual needs of our popular Cornish harbour town of Fowey.

We are looking for someone who will commit to Fowey, roll up their sleeves, and work with us as part of this community. We need someone who is compassionate, Bible believing, teaches God’s word clearly, is Spirit filled and is a generous, people person.

There is a huge opportunity to grow the gospel in Fowey, reaching out to all generations in our town and wider community, and sowing seeds of faith for the many seasonal visitors we encounter, so we become a generous, collaborative and equipping church serving as part of the wider deanery.

The appointment of the new interim Priest-in-Charge comes at a key time for the parish and the deanery and the office holder will have a crucial role to play in shaping mission and ministry for the future. The town and community look to the church at its heart for stability and spiritual leadership, and this historic role gives huge opportunity for reaching out with the gospel in uncertain times. With good outward looking church leadership, and support from a generous church family and community, there is potential for Fowey Parish Church to regain a full sustainable role serving Fowey and its wider catchment, as well as helping to resource the wider church and surrounding parishes in partnership with the deanery. This is a viable rebuilding role that requires commitment and a pioneering spirit.

Fowey PCC has passed a resolution in accordance with the House of Bishops Declaration on the Ministry of Bishops and Priests and is seeking to appoint of an overall male leader, who also welcomes involvement of both male and female clergy and lay people equally to serve and practise their Christian faith in our church. Might you be the person to lead this community into a new season of mission and ministry following The Saints’ Way vision?

We are looking for someone who can help us to be:

  • For all generations, with a focus on the next generation.
  • Outgoing, welcoming and generous; a place where people can belong.
  • A people of love and hope, where people can meet Jesus and go deeper in their faith.

(A full person specification is given in the profile attached.)

Our preferred Sunday pattern is for two services; at 8.30am (traditional 1662 BCP); and 10.30am (more informal all-age style service with children’s activities available), but we are open to new styles and times to reach our community with the Gospel. Each Thursday evening, we meet to pray together. We have run Christianity Explored courses and a ‘Freedom in Christ’ course and had regular home groups. The congregation is very seasonal, and swells considerably during the summer due to influx of visitors and returning holiday home owners, so serving and reaching out to visitors remains a key area of our church ministry and over 400 Gospels were given to visitors through Covid.

Fowey’s schools serve a sizeable catchment area, and our church has worked especially hard to build bridges with the primary school and the community school, where there is a longing to meet the huge potential for leading youth activities, reading groups and after school clubs. Fowey Church is well represented in civic groups and played a leading role in the Covid community response ‘Fowey Isolation Support’ raising over £15,000 through Fowey Church’s charity “John Johns.” The church and members of the congregation play an active role supporting those in need in the town.
