Welcome to the Benefice of The Howardian Group; five parishes and churches in a deeply rural location at the southern end of the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, in North Yorkshire. Straddling the A64, the benefice has excellent road and rail links to Malton, York, Leeds and the East Coast.

With a wealth of well-kept and listed church buildings dating from the 11th century, beautiful Yorkshire villages and stunning countryside around the stately home of Castle Howard, this is an area which attracts a lot of tourists, walkers and cyclists. We look to be accessible, open and welcoming, enriching the lives of those we come into contact with and providing pastoral support for those of the local communities. We offer a wide tradition of worship styles and have close links with a number of local schools.

We are willing people with a desire to see a flourishing worshiping community, celebrating all that God has provided, and excellent local amenities. We look to celebrate our heritage whilst looking to the future of the church and how the benefice can grow in its service to God.

We offer our Priest:

  • A mixed economy of Christian worship within the Anglican Tradition.
  • The prayerful and active support of the people, PCCs and Churchwardens.
  • A creative mission-focused Deanery, Chapter and Diocese.
  • Rich and diverse village communities.
  • Ministry in attractive rural villages.
  • To promote the Diocesan Vision of Generous Churches Making and Nurturing Disciples prayerfully working to deepen the five marks of growth in the parishes of the benefice.
  • To be a partner in mission so that we can broaden our age range; enhance our mission to rural people; and reach out to our community while developing our place within that community.
  • To engage enthusiastically with our schools.
  • To be a person who will help us to grow in Christlikeness by deepening our spirituality, giving, discipleship and by helping our worship to flourish in its current forms as well as through new approaches.
  • To be a ‘motivator’ as well as a ‘collaborator’ who is able to equip, lead and support people in developing their gifts and talents for God’s glory in service to the church and the wider community.
  • To be someone who will draw us together to be an active benefice, working together across the parishes.

We seek a Priest who will help us grow in:

  • Christlikeness through deepening and enriching our worship, prayer and discipleship so that we can grow in confidence and unity.
  • Commitment to rural mission as we seek to reach those we currently don’t across our parishes, Deanery and Diocese with the love of God for all.
  • Partnership in mission with our five congregations, our neighbouring parishes, the Deanery, local schools and ecumenical friends
  • Influence as a visible presence able to share the Gospel within our different villages and also ensure good communications between the congregations.
  • Numbers particularly among younger people and those seeking faith.
