This job has now expired
Archdeaconry of Barnstaple
Permanent
Pro rata of £32,000 (FTE)

The Diocese of Exeter is looking for a Development Adviser based in the Archdeaconry of Barnstaple to join the newly formed Mission and Ministry Development Team. The Development Team works with Mission Communities at a local level. They facilitate the writing and implementation of Mission Action Plans which enable delivery of the diocesan vision.

The Development Adviser will work closely with local leaders, diocesan staff and other members of the Development Team.

We are committed to supporting local worshipping communities as they seek to work collaboratively and to be outward looking. We want to augment our team in order to support lay ministry and help our Mission Communities develop their vision, moving good intentions towards realistic action. The Mission and Ministry Development Team will have a vital role in helping Mission Communities (groups of parishes working together).

Each Development Adviser has responsibility for an Archdeaconry, liaising closely with the relevant Archdeacon, Suffragan Bishop and the Development Team Leader to identify priorities, especially at times of transition.

Development Advisers will nurture a culture of collaborative working and will model collaboration as they recruit and develop a team of volunteers (lay and ordained) to share their work.

Development Advisers will help Mission Communities to form a Mission Action Plan that is realistic but stretching. The aim is for the diocesan three-fold vision of Growing in prayer, Making new disciples and Serving the people of Devon with joy to be delivered more effectively at local level.

We are looking for candidates with a desire to see the Church grow in depth and number of worshippers. They will have excellent inter-personal skills and understanding of the factors contributing to healthy Church life.

The postholder may already be licensed as a deacon, priest or reader, and thus able to preach in the Diocese of Exeter, but this is not an essential requirement. If not already licensed, the postholder will need to demonstrate an ability to teach others in the areas of discipleship and collaborative ministry. It may also be that such a candidate could become a licensed lay worker.

The Development Adviser for Barnstaple Archdeaconry needs to be rooted in the life and worship of the Church of England in North Devon. To undertake this role they will need to live within the Barnstaple Archdeaconry

The Diocese of Exeter matches almost exactly the boundaries of the county of Devon, including Torbay and Plymouth. The diocese has four archdeaconries and nearly 500 parishes.

We are a family of Christians, worshipping God in many different settings and groups. We are led by the Bishop of Exeter, and governed by Diocesan Synod which is made up of representatives from across the Diocese.

The central office is the Old Deanery, Exeter where a small team work in areas such as safeguarding, property and finance to support the mission of our parishes.
