The Richmond Charities is an almshouse charity with its origins dating back to 1600. The aim of the Charity is to provide housing in almshouse communities to elderly residents

Applicants must be an ordained Anglican Priest.

The Chapel of St Francis of Assisi is located at Hickey’s Almshouses, Sheen Road, Richmond. The Chapel is inclusive, hospitable and open to all within the almshouse community and outside. The Richmond Charities has 145 almshouses across 12 estates in the Richmond borough. The charity’s website is www.richmondcharities.org.uk

The stipend is £27,889 (full time) or £22,311 (4 days) plus national insurance and pension contributions (stipend increase for 2023 pending). The post is offered either with or without accommodation, depending on the needs of candidates.

  • be the Chaplain for the whole Charity, encompassing all the almshouse estates, take services in the Chapel and promote the use of the Chapel for spiritual, educational and social matters
  • be responsible for the liturgical worship and planning of all special services
  • undertake pastoral work with residents, visiting those in hospital or in need or simply those who would like a chat
  • treat all residents with dignity and respect
  • encourage and strengthen links with the wider parishes and community and establish the Chapel as part of the wider church
  • value the contributions of older people
  • strengthen the tradition of lay involvement in the Chapel, by encouraging residents to explore their gifts
  • enlarge the congregations from within and outside the immediate community
  • work closely with Scheme Managers, the Chief Executive and the Welfare Committee
  • encourage spiritual growth and develop the life of the Chapel as the heart of the almshouse community
  • take funerals and help residents plan for their funerals
  • support and attend residents’ activities
  • contribute to the Charity’s monthly newsletter for residents, the Almshouse News
  • Have experience of working with the elderly
  • Have strong listening and pastoral skills, warmth and a sense of humour
  • Be an excellent preacher, teacher and communicator
  • Bring energy, enthusiasm and imagination to reach out to residents in the almshouse community and develop links with the wider community and local churches
  • Take overall responsibility for the Chapel of St Francis at Hickey’s Almshouses, services and the planning of liturgy
  • Work well as part of The Richmond Charities’ staff team and be committed to the ethos and aims of the Charity
