The Centre for Church Planting and Growth supports the work of the Bishop of Islington, one of the suffragan bishops of the London Diocese. Bishop Ric was consecrated in September 2015 to support the London Diocesan goal of creating 100 New Worshipping Communities and is available to the National Church to support church planting.

His dynamic and creative team, based at St Edmund the King in London, provides a range of support to identify, develop and plant new worshipping communities as well as encourage church growth.

The Church Growth Leadership Coach role involves partnering with participants of our Church Growth Learning Communities (Clergy and their leadership teams) to enable them to be effective in implementing ministry plans leading to healthy and growing churches. This will take place in the context of the Church Growth Courses offered by the Centre for Church Planting and Growth, and will be a key part of the support offered to churches and parishes from a range of theological backgrounds and of different sizes to develop effective mission leading to growth. Coaches will provide around 15 to 30 coaching sessions per year.

The coach will:

  • Provide one-to-one or group coaching for clergy and other church leaders, to support them in achieving their aims with regard to mission and growth. It is anticipated that these will either in person or by phone or telephone/video call and will be approximately 60 minutes in duration
  • Attend briefings as required to keep up-to-date with our coaching framework and the aims of the Church Growth Programme
  • Maintain positive and open relationships with clergy and leaders in partner churches
  • Prepare for coaching sessions by gathering information and data about the church/parish, the leaders, and information and feedback acquired from any previous coaching or training
  • Follow-up coaching sessions by sharing agreed goals, tasks and any other relevant information
  • Be familiar with and proficient in using a range of current coaching tools and or methodologies
  • Collecting such data about church congregations as may be helpful to track the effectiveness of the Church Growth Programme
  • Continue to develop your own coaching experience in this area, as the Church Growth Programme develops in the light of evidence-based practice


  • Be able to demonstrate an active Christian faith
  • Be an active member of a church community. A reference will be sought from your church leader
  • Have experience in formal coaching or mentoring relationships with leaders
  • An understanding and/or experience of church leadership from one or more theological perspectives
  • An awareness of cultural issues in 21st century London
  • An awareness of organizational models, how organisations work, and models of organizational change
  • Some experience of leading change in an organisation
  • Experience in training and in coaching leaders
  • Commitment to working within a framework of generous orthodoxy with church leaders from different Anglican traditions
  • Work independently and be able to self-start
  • Coach individually or in small groups in an effective and compelling manner
  • Coach leaders of churches, particularly to support them to lead their teams and congregations through change
  • Demonstrate support and care for people you coach, encouraging them in their faith as you hold them accountable for agreed tasks
  • Analyse, interpret and utilise ministry measures and diagnostic tools - making them useful to those who do not easily understand data
