The Bishop of Southwark wishes to appoint an ordained priest to develop the ministry of curates in the richly diverse Diocese of Southwark where we celebrate our differences, speak well of each other and have a passion for social justice.

Southwark is committed to maintaining the strength of stipendiary ministry and to our parishes, taking forward the expansion of both lay and pioneering ministry. The formation and training of our curates is central to this. This post will be inspirational in accompanying our stipendiary and self-supporting curates through their initial years in ministry.

The oversight development and ongoing ministerial formation of curates, their pastoral care and support as they prepare for their first post curacy appointment. The Assistant Director for Formation will report to the Director for Clergy Formation (DDO) and liaise with the Diocesan and Area Bishops, Archdeacons, Area Directors of IME and training incumbents in the development of each curate, both stipendiary and non stipendiary including pioneer curates.

The Assistant Director for Formation will review and develop IME2 to reflect both national guidelines and Southwark Vision including the preparation of curates to celebrate and affirm lay leadership and lay ministry in parishes of the diocese.

The postholder reports to the Director of Formation (DDO) in a newly formed Clergy Formation team.

  • Oversight of IME Phase 2 and post ordination training for curates, with provision of monthly training – including the development of online learning- to meet the needs of assessment of curacy, assessing portfolio work and the collation of final reports to the Bishop of Southwark.
  • Development and pastoral care of curates with a focus on well being and resilience.
  • Offering support and coaching to curates seeking their next post.
  • Ensuring that the commitment to the development of diverse leadership in the diocese, including UKME curates, is evident in the pastoral care and coaching and support available to curates.
  • Liaison with TRIOs, Deaneries and parishes regarding curates on placement including sector ministry.
  • Encouraging and enabling the formation of curates for ministry in Urban Estates and the celebration of lay ministry and lay leadership, together with other priorities for the national church and the diocese of Southwark.
  • Ongoing development of learning communities for curates working with the Director of Pioneering Ministry in respect of Pioneer Curates
  • A passion for the development of colleagues in ordained ministry, evidenced through knowledge and/or experience
  • A sound base of theological and ideally educational/adult learning knowledge with a willingness to develop further.
  • Evidence of working successfully with a wide range of church traditions and styles of ministry.
  • A demonstrable interest in, and experience of training and supporting clergy
  • Experience of parish-based ministry
