The Purpose of the role is:

To make Jesus known through strategic community engagement, working with existing ministries of St Stephen’s Church and developing new initiatives to share the good news of Jesus. The Community Worker will work with the Vicar and the PCC to ensure a cohesive strategy for outreach to the whole parish as outlined in the Mission Action Plan. The Community Worker will do this by:

  • Identifying needs and assets within the community and working in partnership with others to bring about community transformation
  • Empowering individuals
  • Building relationships with people in the community, sharing the gospel in a culturally appropriate way, leading them to faith in Jesus and enabling them to become disciples

Community outreach

  1. Developing our community engagement with a gospel focus by being part of a small team to establish a football outreach ministry
  2. Linking this ministry with an emerging new congregation
  3. Making relationships and networking with other faith and non-faith groups in the parish
  4. Gaining an understanding of the demographics and recent research already undertaken in our parish
  5. Offering practical help by signposting individuals to appropriate agencies for help and advice
  6. Working in partnership with other ministries from the St Stephen’s Church to develop new initiatives where people can encounter God

Community Church

  1. Joining the core team in developing a worshipping and witnessing congregation in the Hartington Road area
  2. Helping to plan and deliver worship in that community which is accessible and culturally relevant
  3. Promoting a culture of welcome and discipleship
  4. Demonstrating, sharing and teaching the Christian faith to those who come
  5. Building relationships with church members who live in the Hartington Road area and support them to reach out to their networks

Reaching families

  1. Building on relationships with our church school and responding to identified needs for children and parents
  2. Exploring how families can be supported during school holidays
  3. Identifying new ways of reaching parents, children and young people who are on the fringe of church life
  4. Exploring the possibility of providing extracurricular activities in school with a Christian focus

Key Result Areas

  • Growth in opportunities for those living in the parish to hear Jesus clearly and follow him
  • A new congregation of Spirit filled disciples meeting regularly to worship and witness in the Hartington Road area
  • Whole families formally on the fringe of church have a sense of belonging, acceptance and are growing in faith

Who we are looking for:

  • Vision and motivation for the task and a passion for outreach to the unchurched
  • An ability to explain the gospel message in accessible language
  • Experience of working in a paid or voluntary capacity in church or community settings.
  • An ability to take initiative and work alone when necessary, in a context of competing priorities
  • Experience of dealing with matters of confidentiality with sensitivity and compassion
  • 5 GCSE or equivalent passes (one must be English Language) or equivalent
  • Able to demonstrate good numeracy skills
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Planning skills; ability to manage self and workload
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to take initiative
  • Ability to naturally and confidently and from personal experience talk about the enrichment that Christian faith brings to everyday life
