In early 2014 Liverpool Cathedral started 'Sepas', a Persian congregation where the worship and teaching is in Farsi or translated into English. Working with Canon Neal Barnes and the Sepas Administrator Mr. Reza Khodayari, the successful candidate for this role will assist in the leadership and smooth running of the worship of this community.

This role would be suited to an emerging leader wishing to develop their skills further.

This role requires the successful candidate to be fluent in both Farsi and English.

Fixed term for 2 years when the position will be reviewed.
22 hours per week.
This role will require completion of a DBS application because of the pastoral element of the role.

  • Coordination of the Sepas teams: There are a number of small teams of volunteers who lead the music, run the audio visuals, lead the Sunday School, translate, coordinate outreach, offer hospitality and welcome. The post-holder will work closely with the Sepas Administrator to help coordinate their involvement.
  • Preparation of Sunday service materials: To include circulating the Order of Service to those involved.
  • Regular Preaching and leading worship, working closely with the Sepas Local Missional Leader, Mr. Saro Esmaeili.

Discipleship programmes

  • Teaching across the range of Sepas discipleship and nurture courses and groups, including preparation for Baptism and Confirmation, and Bible studies.

Pastoral support

  • Support for those in the asylum process through writing letters and, where necessary, attendance at asylum tribunals.
  • Pastoral care including appropriate pastoral visits once required training is given.
  • Oversee the internal and external communications for Sepas, working with the Cathedral communications team.

Administration

  • Some administration duties and oversight of the Sepas Administrator, currently Mr. Reza Khodayari (16 hours p.w).
  • Attendance at the Sepas Team Leaders’ Meetings – usually a monthly meeting.
  • Close liaison with the Sepas Safeguarding leads.
  • Providing a short written report to the Chapter meetings – 10 times a year. (Chapter is the trustee body, responsible under charity law for the oversight of the Cathedral.)

Other relevant duties as may be requested from time to time and commensurate with the role

  • A strong and committed Christian faith with experience of leadership in a church context.
  • Experience of leadership with volunteers
  • Some experience in public speaking such as preaching, teaching and leading Christian worship.
  • Pastoral sensitivity with particular regard to the needs of asylum seekers and vulnerable adults. Able to maintain confidentiality.
  • A commitment to implementing fully the Cathedral’s policy on Safeguarding, working closely with the Sepas safeguarding Leads.
  • Excellent time management
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Written and verbal communication skills in Farsi and English.
  • Organisational and planning skills, including overseeing compliance with all relevant Cathedral policies and procedures.
  • This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check
