This exciting new front of house role plays a key part in welcoming the wide variety of people that visit Birmingham Cathedral. You will possess outstanding people skills and the ability to work in a dynamic way, to offer engaging and enjoyable experiences for all visitors to Birmingham Cathedral. You will be a team player as well as being able to manage and liaise with volunteers. You will care passionately about presentation and engaging with people. You will be eager to work with staff and volunteers to develop engagement opportunities for visitors. We look forward to welcoming a colleague with creativity and presence.

In this role you will oversee the Visitor Experience at Birmingham Cathedral and grow the capacity of the team with new welcome volunteers to support an agreed strategy of delivering excellent hospitality and welcome.

Visitor Experience

  • To lead the overall welcome of visitors to Birmingham Cathedral.
  • To provide a high-quality experience for anyone coming into the building working with clergy, staff, and volunteers.
  • To reach KPI’s relating to visitor numbers, and income targets.
  • To develop ways of engaging visitors by developing a new team of Welcome Volunteers and where applicable work with existing volunteers.
  • To maintain standards of welcome that adhere to safety and security measures and are accessible to the widest variety of people and groups.
  • The ideal candidate will be able to work alongside current Heads of Department while also creating strong relationships with new volunteers especially, Welcome Hosts, Custodians and Heritage guides.
  • You will be the welcoming face of Birmingham Cathedral and comfortable training others to do the same.
  • To take responsibility for creating excellent standards of presentation in all public facing area, possessing flair, a keen eye for detail and high standards of care.
  • To lead with developing a sensitive approach to increasing donations from visitors.
  • To explore an implement opportunities for income development from merchandising.
  • To oversee work placement opportunities i.e. Probation service, Work experience.
  • To create good relations with the existing city-wide volunteer network.
  • Any other reasonable duties and responsibilities as may be required by Chapter.
  • Exceptional Communication skills, together with a confident and mature approach
  • Comfortable working in a place of worship and sensitive communicating both heritage and

faith aspects of the Cathedral’s work.

  • Must be self-motivated whilst understanding the importance of working as part of a team.

  • Sympathetic towards and supportive of the mission and values of the Cathedral
  • Sensitive and intuitive approach to working with people and helping them achieve their best.
  • Experience of working with or as a volunteer
  • Experience in a customer focused environment (ideally in a charity / heritage / church context)
  • Awareness and understanding of health and safety and security requirements in public buildings.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Facilities

SALARY:£22,500 FTE (£12,162 actual)

PENSION: Subject to meeting the relevant criteria you will be enrolled in the Cathedral’s Pension Scheme with 8% employer contributions.

HOURS: 20 hours per week. The hours will be agreed with your line manager but there is an expectation of visible presence in the cathedral Monday – Friday and an expectation of flexibility to meet the changing needs of the Cathedral diary, including some evening and weekend work.

CONTRACT: Three-year fixed term (potential for renewal)

HOLIDAYS: 28 days FTE (15 days PRO RATA) plus bank holidays

This role is part-funded by the Church Commissioners via the Cathedral Sustainability Fund
