Office Holder

The Parish of St John Read and St Peter Simonstone serve two adjacent commuter villages between Burnley and Whalley close to the slopes of Pendle Hill. The community is a close-knit and active one and the Parish is seeking a priest who will engage fully with village life. The Parish benefits from two excellent church schools with a strong Christian ethos and St Peter’s meets in the school hall. The Parish is central Anglican in tradition and the PCC is keen to develop a breadth and freshness in its approach to worship in order to engage with the many families who live in the village.

The post of Priest in charge of Read and Simonstone is being offered with a spacious vicarage in the village and a half-stipend.

The candidate will:

  • Refresh the patterns and styles of worship across the village and, whilst enjoying the Eucharistic and choral tradition at St John’s, find new ways and approaches to worship to engage with families.
  • Establish strong links with the two church schools and work in close partnership with their Headteachers and staff and so develop the Parish’s ministry to the young.
  • Become a well-known pastoral presence within the village, enjoying to the full the life of a close-knit community.
  • Help the congregation(s) to grow in depth of faith and in the love of God

The Ideal Candidate will:

  • Have a disciplined life of prayer, a clear and well-articulated belief in the Gospel
  • Be a team player, able to work closely with the able existing lay leadership and form new leaders
  • Be an able and hardworking pastor who enjoys building strong relationships within and beyond the church community and who sees the opportunities presented by the occasional offices
  • Take a delight in ministry to schools and children
  • Be a clear and accessible communicator and preacher to all ages
