St John’s Baxenden and St Paul’s Accrington are starting a new journey together as a united and joint parish. We are looking to appoint a person who can lead us as we grow together, and help to shape our future. Accrington is a Lancashire town with a proud history in the rise of the cotton industry, in the foundation of the Football League, and in the creation of the heroic Accrington Pals Regiment. Today the town houses a world-famous collection of Tiffany glass and manufactures Hollands Pies, the best in the North West.

The two churches that form this new parish have also got a strong history of being at the heart of their communities, which they continue to serve through two distinctively Christian schools and a variety of parish organisations. The worship style of both churches in the new parish is flexible and variable with a desire to make disciples, be witnesses, grow leaders and inspire children and young people for Jesus Christ, in line with the diocesan Vision 2026.

We are looking for a collaborative leader who will help us find our way together, bring healing to those who are hurting, re-establish lay leadership, grow new leaders and deliver on the following priorities within the united parish:

  • Deliver engaging worship and preaching that inspires
  • Develop the prayer life of the parish and form deep disciples
  • Create a family orientated mission to bring the Gospel to all ages
  • Have a strong connection with our two voluntary aided schools
  • Be a visible presence in the community
  • Be a pastor and shepherd to all, who will listen and care
  • Be a good communicator

The Candidate we are praying for

  • Will be rooted in Scripture and open to the renewal of the Holy Spirit
  • Won’t try to do it all themselves, but enable and grow the gifts of others
  • Will help us apply the Bible to our daily life, so that we can live as confident disciples of Jesus
  • Will get us excited again about prayer and the gifts of the Holy Spirit
  • Will create healthy churches that transform their communities
  • Will, after the difficulties we have faced, help us rediscover our joy

For an informal conversation about the needs of the parish please ring the Revd Stephen Brown, Chapter Clerk on 01706 213838 or email
