The Diocese of Blackburn
The Diocese of Blackburn represents the Church of England in most of Lancashire and part of Wigan Metropolitan Borough, covering an area of 878 square miles with a population of 1.3 million.
The Diocese has a new Vision strategy, focussed on Kingdom growth and renewal: 'Vision 2026: Healthy Churches Transforming Communities' commits the Diocese to make disciples, be witnesses and grow leaders for Jesus Christ.
Main purpose and scope of the post:
To encourage and assist parishes in the vision objective of ‘Giving Generously of our time, talents and money to the cause of Christ, with particular emphasis on the IDEA section of the National ‘Building a Generous Church’ Strategy, helping parishes to Inspire, Disciple, Embed and Activate generosity across the diocese.
This will involve working in partnership with the current Stewardship Resourcing Officer (who will be focussing on the MINT section of the National Strategy (Mechanisms, Impact, Need and Trust) and other colleagues within the Diocesan Offices, churches and PCC’s to ensure the ongoing development of Christian Stewardship and Generosity throughout the Diocese
Ongoing development of Christian Stewardship in the Diocese. Working with colleagues within the Diocesan Offices, churches and PCC’s and offering support and guidance to Bishop’s staff on issues of Christian Stewardship and generosity.
Visiting parishes to speak and teach about generous giving as part of Christian discipleship to PCCs, parish groups, deaneries and other natural groupings.
Ensuring that parishes understand their own financial position and giving profiles and helping them understand how they can encourage generous stewardship within their church though the use of Giving in Grace or other resources.
Where requested, visiting parishes on a Sunday to speak about generous giving and Christian discipleship during Sunday worship.
Creating resources for parishes to use, including further materials for small groups to help embed a culture of generosity across the diocese, including a new Lent course.
Keeping records of parishes who have been visited and, in conjunction with other colleagues, identify those where input would be beneficial and endeavour to meet with them.
Monitoring changes in giving levels following visits to parishes.
Adapting and developing ‘self-help’ stewardship resources including parish and deanery visits and offering advice and support where appropriate.
Producing a series of films/vlogs/podcasts linking generosity to discipleship.
Maintaining the section of the diocesan website that will contain information about generosity and other issues relevant to the IDEA section of the strategy as developed by the National Team.
Providing appropriate articles on generosity for inclusion within Money Matters and other diocesan e-bulletins and publications.
Fostering links with other Northern Dioceses in the sharing of resources.
Playing a full part in the life of the Northern and National Stewardship Network.
Promoting stewardship and generosity principles at all levels of the diocese.
Assisting the existing Stewardship Resourcing Officer in the training of PCC treasurers and Gift Aid Secretaries. This is done in collaboration with the Finance Team.
Working with the existing Stewardship Resourcing Officer and the Finance Team to provide ad hoc support to treasurers and Gift Aid Secretaries.
When invited, visiting the Finance Committee to provide them with an update on the Generous Giving work.
Member of Archdeacon of Blackburn’s Making Disciples Team.
Attending all relevant training and diocesan meetings or other meetings as appropriate.
Undertaking other tasks and specific projects as may reasonably be required.
