We are looking to appoint a Parish Adviser to provide advice and support to Parochial Church Council (PCC) members on charity governance and financial matters including accounting and compliance with charity regulation.

The role is based in Hove and we offer additional benefits such as free parking, a range of staff development activities and the Diocesan Pension Scheme with 15.1% employer contribution.

A primary requirement of the role will be work with the Generous Giving Adviser to encourage sound financial governance, strategic financial stewardship and generous giving across the diocese. The position also involves providing training seminar, resources & resources for PCC Officers.

The successful candidate will have a passion for mission and providing support to PCCs, excellent communication skills, sound financial background preferably in church / charity sector.   • Keep up to date with the relevant legal framework and regulations for PCC charity governance and accounting, providing advice and training to PCCs as necessary and appropriate.
  • Respond to ad hoc queries from PCC members and treasurers.
  • Run training courses for PCC officers on a range of governance and financial subjects.
  • Advise parishes about what is best practice in accounting, record keeping, gift aid and other financial matters relating to parish finance excluding parish ministry costs, tax or buildings-related finances, parish trusts — which should all be directed to the relevant internal and external experts for best practice advice.
  • Regularly communicate by email with clergy, administrators, churchwardens and treasurers by means of newsletters and other regular diocesan communications.
  • Evaluate and promote innovative ways of serving parishes in stewardship (e.g. digital giving).
  • Be the diocesan point of reference for best source of information on legacies and 'Friends' schemes.
  • To administer the Parish Giving Scheme in the diocese and encourage its uptake with PCC members and treasurers.
  • To work with the Generous Giving Adviser to develop a generous culture within the diocese.
  • To work with the Database and Statistics Administrator to ensure that all churches file the annual financial returns and accounts.

Qualification & Experience:

Essential

  • Experience of preparing accounts for smaller charities /Churches
  • To have a practical and working knowledge of the Charities Act 2011 and the Charity SORP.
  • Understanding of how Church of England parish finances work

Desirable

  • Knowledge of fundraising especially from grant-making trusts
  • To hold an accounting qualification
  • Experience of working in advisory accounting roles

  • Ability to explain financial ideas to a wide range of audiences
  • Experience of using computerised accounts and spreadsheet applications

  • Experience of planning and giving presentations
