One of the principles at the heart of the Bishop of Southwark’s vision for the Diocese is that of vocational renewal. In seeking to encourage people from across this diverse Diocese to explore the ministries to which God may be calling them, this role will have an important part to play. Working closely with the Director of Vocations (who is also the DDO), the post holder will have a passion for encouraging vocations and be skilled in guiding candidates through the process of discernment for ordained ministry at Diocesan and national levels.

Accountable to the Director of Vocations, and working closely with her, as well as a large, voluntary Vocations Team of around 70 people, lay and ordained, this post offers a challenging and exciting opportunity to take significant responsibility for an area of work that forms a vital part of the Bishop’s strategy for vocational renewal within the Diocese, and the work of the Renewal and Reform programme in the Church of England more widely. There are particularly 3 areas of focus:

  • Vocational Renewal: taking a strategic role alongside the Director of Vocations in the shaping and delivery of the Bishop of Southwark’s key aim of vocational renewal as part of the Southwark Vision. There is currently a particular priority for encouraging vocations to the distinctive diaconate.

  • Vocational Discernment and Assessment: working with candidates through the Diocesan process of discernment for the ministries of priest and distinctive deacon, exercising wisdom and discernment in advising the Bishop of Southwark on the suitability of candidates for sponsorship for the national selection processes, and producing the required detailed and sensitive supporting documentation. .

  • Vocational Awareness: taking an ongoing responsibility for nurturing and enhancing their own and the Diocese’s commitment to, and understanding of, issues around vocation and vocational discernment to the ordained ministries of priest and distinctive deacon.

Vocational Renewal

  • Encourage potential candidates for ordination in collaboration with other members of the Vocations Team, working with Incumbents/Chaplains and Deaneries more generally.
  • Be a visible, proactive point of contact for vocations information and queries in the Diocese.
  • Take a leading role in vocational development including the planning, management, and delivery of vocations initiatives and encouraging vocational reflection and discernment as widely as possible
  • Assist the DDO in recruiting and training members of the Diocesan Vocations Team and sharing with her in the day-to-day operational oversight of the Area Directors of Ordinands and the Co-ordinating Vocations Advisers
  • Deliver a coordinated, systematic, and rigorous approach to discernment for ordained ministry in co-operation with the Vocations team
  • Have oversight, on behalf of the DDO, of ordinand finances and the day-to-day management of the Vocations Department budget.
  • Share with the DDO in the pastoral care of ordinands in training.

Vocational Discernment and Assessment

  • Interview candidates for all categories of ordained ministry
  • Prepare Sponsoring Papers where appropriate to the high standard expected by both the Ministry Division and the Diocese of Southwark.
  • Advise the Bishop of Southwark on the suitability of candidates for sponsorship for Bishops’ Advisory Panels (BAP).
  • Liaise with the Ministry Division and candidates regarding BAP dates and venues, and debrief candidates following their attendance at a BAP.
  • Advise candidates with regard to suitable training pathways in preparation for ordination
  • Take particular responsibility for candidates seeking to be presented to the Ministry Division’s Candidates’ Panel
  • Keep abreast of theological education and developments in training through regular liaison with the Ministry Division, TEIs, and the national network of DDOs.
  • Brief Area Bishops as necessary regarding vocations issues, candidates’ progress, and any other information that might be apposite as directed by the DDO.
  • Attend and assist in leading Diocesan Vocations Team meetings and training, monthly ADO meetings, and the national biennial DDO conference and other training days as required.
  • Preach about vocation across the Diocese, visiting Parishes and Deaneries as invited.
  • Be attached to a worshipping community within the Diocese.

We are seeking an experienced priest who:

  • has a demonstrable interest in, and some experience of, encouraging and discerning vocation
  • can write and deliver detailed policy, procedures and guidance documents
  • is confident in writing substantial, sensitive reports on candidates for licensed ministry
  • has a sound theological and educational knowledge with a willingness to develop further
  • is experienced in working successfully with a wide range of church traditions and styles of ministry
  • can engage sympathetically and sensitively with individuals while being able to challenge appropriately
  • is an effective communicator, able to relate to and colloborate with people at all levels
