We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic person who is passionate about improving the learning environments and school sites of our 83 Church of England schools across the Diocese of Guildford.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a School Buildings Officer to join our Education Team to assist us in ensuring we are meeting the statutory obligations in the provision of our school buildings, related properties and supporting other officers with school organisation matters.

Candidates should have experience of project management, whilst a legal or accountancy background as well as any experience in the field of education could be helpful.

It is essential that candidates communicate effectively as liaising with professional bodies, independent advisors, school governors and local authorities will be a key part of this role.

You will work alongside our Lead Buildings Officer supporting colleagues in the reporting to the Diocesan Board of Education’s Building & Estates Committee.

  • To co-ordinate and administer the different capital funding programmes for school buildings including Schools Capital Condition Funding, Devolved Formula Capital (DFC), School Condition Allocation (SCA), reporting to the DBE’s Building & Estates Committee and Academy Trusts
  • To provide effective project management and administrative support to ensure the successful delivery of the school capital buildings projects across the diocese
  • To be the lead school buildings officer responsible for maintaining and developing processes and procedures required to financially manage and control the school buildings operation

  • Educated to A level standard or equivalent
  • Good GCSE pass or equivalent in English, Maths and other subjects

  • Degree or diploma
  • Project management qualification
  • Finance qualification

  • To have worked as part of an administrative team or buildings operation for an organisation in a financial capacity

  • Experience of working as a buildings or finance officer in a charitable company or diocese
  • To have worked with schools and academies in the education sector

  • Understanding of the key aspects of managing a building project and the Quality Assurances processes which are required to see a project to a successful conclusion

  • Knowledge of the buildings sector in the Diocesan context or wider Church of England

The Diocese of Guildford includes significant areas of Surrey and Hampshire and creeps into West Sussex and one of the London Boroughs.

This is an exciting time in our diocese, with the launch of the vision of Transforming Church, Transforming Lives in 2016 leading to significant new missional energy in many of our churches, chaplaincies and schools. It’s been especially encouraging to witness the development of around 80 new worshipping communities since the launch, including four major projects in areas of new housing.

Over the past two years we have moved our diocesan teams into new, attractive, open-plan offices on the University of Surrey Research Park; and more recently we have embarked on a major review of the services we offer, seeking to ensure that our diocesan strategy gets well embedded, that our resources are efficiently managed, and that Church House Guildford is genuinely scratching where the parishes are itching. Note that due to the covid pandemic, our teams are currently working remotely from the safety of their homes.
