Minister: Mariners Church Gloucester

This job has now expired

Mariners Gloucester is a Charismatic Evangelical Anglican Church located in the docks area of the city. We have a church family which has grown from 7 to over 150 children and adults in the last 8 years, and we are looking for a Minister who can help us consolidate this position, while continuing to impart fresh vision and lead us forward.

Minister of Mariners Church Gloucester

Mariners Gloucester is a vibrant charismatic evangelical church located in the regenerated docks area of the city.  Our church family has grown from 7 to over 150 children and adults in the last 8 years. We occupy a grade II listed chapel with a capacity for about 110 people, which is in a prime position in the docks close to the Gloucester Quays retail outlet. Hence it daily attracts a number of visitors. We also have a grade II listed church hall nearby.

Gloucester is the cathedral city of the Cotswolds, with its roots stretching back to Roman times and a wonderful Christian heritage with its associations with Wesley and Robert Raikes.  It is on the doorstep of the beautiful Cotswolds and has benefitted from extensive regeneration in the last decade.  Much of the regeneration, which is still in progress, has focused on the city's historic docks where our chapel is situated.

We have outgrown our chapel and before lockdown were meeting on Sunday morning at a local school. Pre-lockdown, we also held services in the chapel on Sunday evenings, which were run and attended by our younger members, and these services often attracted the passing public into the chapel.

The Church was founded as an extra-parochial seamen’s and watermen’s mission in the 1840s and has remained outside the Parish system. When the chapel opened Gloucester was a thriving inland port and the church was proactive in seeking to serve the spiritual and practical needs of the dock’s community.   Mariners was once referred to by the then Bishop as ‘an eclectic congregation for whom the lowest of our low churches is too high’; our current worship reflects this with a minimum of liturgy.  Recent influences have been from Holy Trinity Church, Brompton along with some teaching from Bethel Redding and Ellel Ministries.   Our church family has come from a variety of denominations and backgrounds and lives across the Gloucester area.

We have no ground outside of the Chapel and Hall, and we do not have a house for the Minister and family.  Being outside the Parish system, we are responsible for the stipend of the Minister and do not pay a parish share.  As there is no house provided, we provide the standard housing allowance for the Minister.

Having enjoyed a very substantial growth in our church family since 2012, we are looking for a Minister who can help us consolidate this position, while continuing to impart fresh vision and lead us forward.  Some of the specific things we are looking for are:

  • A clear passion for God, His Church and the local community.
  • A Spiritually mature, Spirit-filled Christian, devoted to prayer and worship, meeting the character qualifications of 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1.
  • Expects the Holy Spirit to be active in the world and church today, and is willing and able to help us all to grow in the gifts and fruit of the Holy Spirit.
  • Believes the Bible to be the Word of God and is committed to teaching its truths.
  • Will lead us in reaching out to those outside the church through evangelism and social transformation ministries.
  • Encourage and challenge us to grow in discipleship as a body of believers and as individuals with inspirational biblical teaching, corporate prayer, worship; caring for each other and fellowship being central.
  • Be team focused sharing and enabling others to be fully involved in the work of the church.  This includes working well and collaboratively with the Senior Leadership team and Trustees.
  • Sensitive to different outlooks and ways of doing things.

·       Knows and understands the applicable Safeguarding requirements and responsibilities.

•      Committed to their own personal and spiritual development, and willing to adapt to change and take on new ways of working.

If you wish to have an informal conversation regarding this opportunity, please contact Steve Smith who is a member of the current Senior Leadership Team via the Mariners Church office
