Associate Minister at St John’s Houghton with St Peter’s Kingmoor (Carlisle)

We are a classical evangelical parish, committed to discipleship and evangelism. We seek an ordained Anglican “to equip the saints for works of service” for the many gospel opportunities here. Our main pattern for ministry is to prayerfully teach the Bible across every area of our congregational and parish life.

There is some flexibility to shape this new role around the strengths and skills of the person appointed. They will lead on some strategic ministry areas across the whole parish, as well as focusing on the work in Houghton village, including the 11am congregation, outreach homegroup and leading a team to plant a new congregation.

This post would suit someone completing their curacy, or with more experience who would enjoy the outreach and ministry opportunities here.

Further information is available on our website www.HKchurch.org.uk

Questions, or informal expressions of interest, can be directed to the vicar Andrew.Towner@HKchurch.org.uk // 01228 515363

Closing date: 9am, Monday 28th September

It is expected that the Associate Minister will be:

+ Devoted to “prayer and the ministry of the word” (Acts 6).

+ Discerning and leading a team in planting a new congregation in Houghton, designed to reach beyond our current church family and fringe. To this end the incoming Associate Minister will have a particular focus on the St John’s 11am congregation, as well as joining the FORUM team.

+ Playing a full part in the leadership of the Parish, alongside the Vicar. Prior to lockdown this included at least the following:

Weekly planning, review and mutual support meetings with the Vicar;

Playing a full part in Staff Team, PCC and other such bodies;

Assisting in the planning and delivery of services and sermon series;

Monthly Home Group leaders’ meeting;

Monthly Partnership meeting (our united parish gathering for praise & prayer).

+ Serving in Anglican ministry across the Parish, with a particular focus on Houghton, including:

Baptisms, weddings, funerals & pastoral visits;

Community engagement.

+ Leading in a few areas across the Parish (depending on need, desire and capacity) by leading / developing teams committed to ministry focussed on some of:

Children, youth, workers, the retired, or another specific group;

Evangelism, discipleship or a focussed ministry type;

Training and equipping the saints for ministry and service.

This post would suit someone completing their curacy, or with more experience who would enjoy the outreach and ministry opportunities here.

The role will require an Enhanced DBS.

The Diocese of Carlisle covers (more or less) the County of Cumbria; it is called the Diocese of Carlisle because traditionally Dioceses had to be called after a city rather than a county - though this is changing.

The Diocese is divided into 11 deaneries, and then into about 100 benefices each with a vicar; each benefice consists of one or more parishes - and there are more than 260 parishes in the Diocese.

This structure is designed to make sure that everyone in the country has a parish church where they have the legally enforceable right to be baptised, to be married and to be buried; and to make sure that there are intermediate levels of responsibility, accountability and support.
