Interim Minister (0.2 stipend) Lowgate St Mary

This job has now expired
Kingston upon Hull

St Mary’s is a city centre church in the heart of Hull, which has almost no resident parish population but many opportunities to minister to those who work nearby or come into the city centre. The Church is a venue for ministry to the homeless and the deprived and has hosted a variety of arts events. The congregation is not large but is committed to offering a distinctive ministry to the city centre and retaining their choral tradition within the liturgy of the BCP.

By Spring 2022 it is envisaged that it will share a vicar with Hull Minster and we are seeking an Interim Minster who will support and deepen the existing life of the Church and prepare them for a closer relationship with Hull Minster. The Interim Minister will be licensed as Assistant Curate to the Minster as an expression of the envisgaed collaboration with colleagues there but will not be expected to be closely involved in their day to day life. Previously this has been a House for Duty post and now a 0.2 stipend, in lieu of the house provision, is being offered.

They are currently engaged in a significant building project which will bring greater flexibility and better resources to the church. It is hoped that work on the first phase will begin in early 2021. There is an existing Project Team in place and the Interim Minster is not expected to engage closely in the detail but it is hoped will provide overall encouragement and support as they find their way through the realities of the building work.

The primary responsibilities are:

  • To prepare the church family for coming under the ministerial oversight of the Vicar of Hull Minster by early 2022
  • To build links with Hull Minster, identifying potential areas of synergy and collaboration
  • To steer the PCC and members through the building restoration project but not to be expected to lead this
  • To identify opportunities for ministry to those who work and visit the City Centre
  • To retain the distinctive style of worship at St Mary’s but seek to broaden the range of people attending
  • To deepen the discipleship of those attending the church and their confidence in God

The Interim Minister will:

  • Collaborate with all and model this in their relationship with the team at Hull Minster
  • Encourage and envision the church family as they look to the future changes
  • Communicate well, helping church members to feel involved and informed
  • Share their enthusiasm for the Book of Common Prayer, and maintain it as the main form of service.

Unfortunately it is not always straightforward for clergy from overseas to be appointed to posts in the Church of England. The policy of the UK Border Agency is that normally the organisation making an appointment has been able to prove that it is impossible to appoint a person who is a national of a European Economic Area country, before a visa giving permission to work will be issued to a person who comes from elsewhere.
