As Media Officer, you will gain a variety of experience working as part of the Media Team and the wider Communications Department, supporting both the day-to-day work and longer-term communications projects.

With excellent communication skills and confident in public-facing situations, you will act as the primary point of contact for the department, dealing with enquiries from regional, national and international media.

By providing the full range of support from maintaining the media centre section of the website and drafting and researching press releases to developing relationships with journalists and proactively seeking out and developing good news stories, you will develop expertise in PR and Communications generally. You will also be part of the media support team for General Synod both in York (July) and London (Feb/Nov).

Interviews may take place via Skype.

The Role

  • Acting as a primary point of contact for the Church of England Communications department, dealing with enquiries from regional, national and international media
  • Assisting in day-to-day media support, with some out-of-hours duties
  • Maintaining the Media Centre section of the Church of England website, publishing press releases and assisting with producing the Daily Media Digest
  • Drafting and researching press releases
  • Helping arrange interviews, press briefings and other media opportunities
  • Proactively seeking out and developing good news stories - both from departments based at Church House, Westminster, and the wider Church of England
  • Developing relationships with journalists and the national network of Diocesan Communications Officers
  • Supporting communications for projects within the national church including the Renewal and Reform programme
  • Being part of media support team for General Synod both in York (July) and London (Feb/Nov)
  • Being the operational lead for internal newsletters around the wider Church

The Requirements

Essential

Knowledge/Experience:

  • Media/communications experience in the workplace
  • Experienced in use of social media
  • Experience of successfully coordinating and delivering communications projects

  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Ability to write concisely and clearly
  • Confident approach in public-facing situations
  • Track record of working to deadlines
  • Ability to work under pressure during busy news periods
  • Ability to work in a team and build key relationships with other departments within the National Church Institutions
  • Excellent IT skills

Desirable​

  • Good understanding of the Church of England and issues it faces
  • Sympathy with the aims and ethos of the Church of England
  • Experience of writing press releases
  • Audio and video editing
  • Podcast production
