Incumbent of St Mary with St Peter, Bury St Edmunds in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich

This job has now expired
Bury St Edmunds

The churches are in the heart of the thriving town of Bury St Edmunds. We are evangelical in tradition, with a wide variety of worship styles from traditional Prayer Book to informal. We are united in our desire to share the joyful message of Christ with those around us. St Mary’s is the civic church for our town, which gives us significant opportunities for witness.

Key priority:

An experienced incumbent who can lead us in Biblical preaching, develop and manage a team, and take advantage of the significant civic role.

  1. to worship the God and Father of our Lord Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit
  2. to teach the Bible in a way relevant to everyday life
  3. to grow people in faith, understanding and love
  4. to equip people to serve others
  5. to offer people opportunities to meet Jesus and discover forgiveness and new life

    Church website:

The benefice is within the diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich; Bury St Edmunds is a historic market town, with a population of about 42,000; it is a growing town with a wide range of facilities and businesses; there are many other churches, which are linked by Churches Together; we largely have relatively well educated and well-off people.

We have a wide range of services in different styles, including robed choir at some services at St Mary’s, which has a strong musical tradition, and a monthly café church at St Peter’s; mission, both local and worldwide, is very important to us – we support a range of agencies both local and overseas, and serve the community in many ways, generally in close cooperation with other churches; our ministry includes involvement with pastoral ministry in local care homes as well as in the West Suffolk Hospital

St Mary’s is the civic church for Bury St Edmunds, which provides us with opportunities for witness on a number of important occasions during the year, e.g. Battle of Britain, Remembrance Sunday, etc; it is also an important tourist site with up to 15,000 visitors each year

We are looking for a priest who will:

  • build on his/her experience as an incumbent to serve as vicar of St Mary's with St Peter's, to have oversight of the parish and develop a vision for the parish, recognising the autonomy of both St Mary's and St Peter's, together with the staff team and PCC.
  • lead the members of the churches (especially at St Mary’s) to share the Christian faith with people of all ages; be a witness to Jesus Christ in strengthening and encouraging relationships with young people, families, and single adults, encouraging and resourcing small groups and prayer support, as well as expanding pastoral care for those in need such as the elderly, lonely and isolated.
  • have immediate responsibility and oversight of the services, pastoral work and administration at St Mary's, developing a strategy for the future, building a strong team, and helping the church members to grow in prayer, biblical understanding, mission and evangelism, and generosity.
  • build on and develop relationships with the civic leaders, employers and church leaders, demonstrating commitment to the organisations with which we have and could have positive relationships, including the cathedral and the deanery, as well as other churches in the town.
  • maintain and build up relationships with local schools especially the Guildhall Feoffment School. Because this is not a church school the Vicar is not ex officio a member of the governing body. However, the last three Vicars have been members, and the governing body intends to invite the next Vicar.
  • A thoughtful and articulate preacher, grounded in the Bible as the inspired Word of God
  • An experienced incumbent who can inspire and manage a broad team of staff and volunteers, releasing them to work independently as their identified gifts allow
  • A pastor, able to get alongside people and support them with love and compassion
  • Stimulated by the privilege of a significant civic role
  • Mission-minded and ready to reach out to the local community, as well as supporting the world-wide church
