St James, Briercliffe is a one-church Parish on the edge of Burnley which seeks a priest in the liberal Catholic or central tradition. This post represents a unique opportunity to continue the process of turning round a parish after a very difficult period in its life. Taking over from an outstanding Interim Vicar, the successful candidate will seek ways of sustaining growth, bedding in emerging patterns of lay leadership, strengthening financial stability and enhancing relationships with local schools and local people.

The successful candidate will:

  • Hear and seek to enhance the vision for growth in depth and number that has emerged in the past year and continue in the strategic direction laid down by the PCC.
  • Be strongly committed to lay ministry and support and grow the teams of laypeople who have undertaken increased responsibilities under the interim Vicar.
  • Continue to grow the faith and develop the confidence of laypeople in the Parish so that they can feel equipped to live out the Gospel in their daily lives.
  • Pay close attention to the administrative and financial health of the benefice
  • Build on the Eucharistic traditions of the Parish and continue its strong tradition of preaching whilst seeking new styles and patterns of worship, especially outside Sundays, to engage with young families.
  • Enhance the use of special events such as Harvest, Remembrance Sunday and Christmas to reach out to the wider community.
  • Minister closely to St James, Lanehead, Church of England Primary School and build links with other schools in the Parish.
  • Develop and strengthen links with community groups and organisations, uniformed groups and the Community Centre.


The Benefice seeks a priest who:

  • Has a strong and disciplined life of prayer and will seek ways to draw others into prayer.
  • Can articulate a life-changing love for Jesus Christ and longs for others to find him in the worshipping life of the Church
  • Enjoys working with children and young people and is happy in the school environment
  • Is a good listener, able to recognise talents and strengths in others in order to encourage active discipleship
  • Will be community-focused and actively involved in all aspects of Parish life
  • Will be sensitive to the need for ongoing healing and rebuilding
  • Is willing to play a full part in the life of the Deanery and Diocese
