The Benefice of Hampsthwaite & Killinghall and Birstwith is made up of four villages between Harrogate and Nidderdale, in an area of North Yorkshire that is both beautiful and accessible.  The population is growing with new housing areas. There are three churches, each set in a village which has a school and active communities.  There is an excellent modern vicarage.  The parishes have the shared ambition to grow, and are looking for a vicar to prioritise outreach and connecting with people within and between the villages, establishing a high-profile presence in all three villages.  Their new priest will be someone reliant on the Holy Spirit, with good people skills, who wants to see the growth of the Kingdom of God within and especially beyond the church. He or she will therefore require passion for discipleship, mission and pastoral care and, as a team player, be able to enthuse others with similar passion.

We are looking for a vicar who will:

  • Encourage and develop mission in the benefice and where appropriate across the area in co-operation with other churches in the deanery and with ecumenical colleagues.
  • Bring an innovative, imaginative and creative approach to church growth, both numerical and spiritual, for example via LYCIG (Leading your Church into Growth).
  • Work closely with the churchwardens, so as to allow the mutual flourishing of our four congregations.
  • Work with the wardens and PCCs to ensure the most efficient and effective structures for governance and financial provision and to further develop our plans for mission.
  • Continue to develop lay leadership and ministries across the parish, especially because the benefice covers a large area and has the four congregations. In particular developing licensed lay ministry will be a priority.
  • Grow and develop the ministry and involvement of the church with local schools especially the Church of England Primary Schools in each village and continue to offer the ‘Open the Book’ ministry in these schools.
  • Consider and encourage appropriate engagement with the people of the new housing developments across the benefice while continuing to cherish the existing members of the congregations.
  • Strengthen work with young people through ministry to families and the choirs, music groups and Sunday Schools of each church.

We need a vicar who will help us achieve the following priorities:

  • Provide visionary, positive, effective, sympathetic and strong leadership, support and guidance for the benefice.
  • Work with us to grow the congregations numerically and increase people's confidence so they can live and tell the good news across the benefice and beyond.
  • Support the churches in coming to a common vision for working more closely together, and meeting with our churchwardens on a regular basis to help us develop our benefice mission and ministry strategy.
  • Draw out the skills and talents of the laity and use them in worship and for mission in the community.
  • Involve children and young people in services and strengthen and develop Sunday Schools and musical groups.
  • Be a visible and engaging presence in the community.

And who will have the following skills and gifts:

  • The ability to identify and respond to opportunities for mission.
  • A deep prayer life, a living and personal relationship with Jesus and the ability to draw on a wide range of spiritual resources.
  • Proven leadership skills including the ability to engage, motivate, inspire and effectively coordinate lay leaders and other volunteers.
  • The ability to make and build links with individuals and community organisations whose involvement with the Church is limited.
  • The ability to envision and lead change, where necessary, in a sensitive and collaborative way.
  • The ability to preach well in a variety of styles and formats to a broad range of listeners with varying outlooks, ages and understanding.
  • Good people skills in order to become a visible, effective presence in our communities.
  • Proven skills of collaboration as a team player and leader


The Diocese of Leeds comprises five Episcopal Areas, each coterminous with an Archdeaconry. This is now one of the largest dioceses in the country and its creation is unprecedented in the history of the Church of England. It covers an area of around 2,425 square miles, and a population of around 2,642,400 people.

The three former dioceses were created in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to cater for massive population changes brought about by industrialisation and, later, mass immigration. The diocese comprises major cities (Bradford, Leeds, Wakefield), large industrial and post-industrial towns (Halifax, Huddersfield, Dewsbury), a spa town (Harrogate), market towns (Skipton, Ripon, Richmond and Wetherby), and deeply rural areas (the Dales). The whole of life is here, along with all the richness, diversity and complexities of a changing world.

The Diocesan Bishop (The Rt Rev’d Nick Baines) is assisted by five Area Bishops (Bradford, Huddersfield, Kirkstall, Wakefield and Ripon) and five archdeacons (Bradford, Halifax, Leeds, Pontefract, Richmond & Craven).  The Bishop of Ripon is the Rt Rev’d Dr Helen-Ann Hartley.
