Lambeth Palace is a unique building of significant historical and global provenance. It is, first and foremost, the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury and their family, as well as home to a wider, diverse and thriving, residential community. It is also an office and the epicentre of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s ministry to the Church of England and the global Anglican Communion. It is a Grade I listed building comprising various listed buildings dating from the 12th to the 20th centuries, set within 10 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens.

By its nature and location, Lambeth Palace is seen as an iconic statement of the values and the nature of the Church of England, the Anglican Communion and the ministry of the Archbishop of Canterbury. As such, the way it is managed is essential to the witness and ministry exercised or exemplified within its boundaries. It requires flair to work well, joy to give atmosphere, peace to encourage ministry and love to welcome guests of all kinds.

In collaboration with the wider Hospitality Team, the Catering Team play an essential role in the setting of the tone and ethos of the practical operational extension of the Archbishop’s ministry.

In line with the Archbishop’s wishes, we continue to develop the events business at Lambeth Palace in order to open up the Palace more to the public, increasing awareness of the Archbishop’s ministry and generating income that can contribute to the upkeep and work of the Palace.

This is a unique opportunity assisting the Hospitality Operations Manager in bringing practical support to an important aspect of Lambeth Palace’s outreach.

As Catering Supervisor, you will ensure the safe management and co-ordination of waiting staff teams, the effective running and delivery of the service and ensure that all waiting staff adhere to and uphold the standards of Lambeth Palace. In doing so you will support the Hospitality team to deliver the day to day catering and hospitality at Lambeth Palace in a safe and well managed environment for staff and visitors.

To be successful, you will need to be passionate about customer service and the values that we respect when welcoming guests. With excellent leadership and team working skills. you will be highly organised and efficient, able to prioritise and have the ability to remain calm under pressure.

With experience of working safely within the hospitality and catering sector, you will have excellent customer service skills and an awareness of the importance of confidentially in the variety of events that take place at Lambeth Palace.

This post is offered on a one year fixed-term contract.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Greeting guests and presenting oneself as an ambassador for Lambeth Palace Hospitality and the ethos it stands for.
  • Oversee and manage casual waiting staff, including the management of their breaks and ensuring the team’s signing in and out of the building.
  • Provide detailed daily briefs to casual catering staff as well as for smaller evening events.
  • To act as a ‘Lead’ or Maître d’Hôtel on catered events.
  • Uphold and adhere to statutory health and safety regulations, leading the casual catering team in carrying out daily and weekly checks and inspections.
  • Responsible for the essential induction, ongoing training and consistent high-standards of all new and temporary casual catering staff.
  • Operating and delivering small catered events autonomously.
  • Produce and check all dining stationery, liaising with the kitchen, Head Chef and Executive Head Chef, where applicable, over essential dietary and allergen information.
  • Stock management of consumable/ perishable items, as well as the replenishing and ordering of new supplies.
  • Working in collaboration with the Events Operations Assistant, and liaising with the Hospitality Operations Manager where applicable, over room set-ups, break downs and cleaning.
  • Answer guests’ questions about menu items, ingredients, and allergens.
  • Maintains familiarity with menu items, plus wine and drinks information.
  • Meets with managers and other wait staff regularly in order to learn about changes to processes and Standard Operating Procedures.

Essential

Skills/Aptitudes:

  • Good command of spoken and written English.
  • Highly organised and efficient, with good administrative skills; able to prioritise.
  • Able to work methodically and accurately.
  • Excellent team leadership and communication skills.
  • Possess an acute eye-for-detail.
  • An ability to be calm under pressure and manage multiple workloads.
  • Ability to work autonomously and take initiative, exercising good personal judgement.
  • Ability to work/operate sensitively and discreetly in different hospitality situations.
  • Awareness of how to work sensitively in the full spectrum of events that take place at Lambeth Palace, such as interfaith and international events.
  • Confidentiality is extremely important, able to work with discretion is essential.
  • Excellent leadership and teamwork skills with the ability to forge good working relationship, encourage and motivate others.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • A willingness to work unsociable hours.

Knowledge/Experience:

  • Experience of working safely within the hospitality and catering sector.
  • Experience of dealing with a wide range of people in the course of work.
  • Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate, or equivalent.

Personal Attributes:

  • Able to lift and carry as necessary and work at height.
  • Clean and smart appearance.
  • Friendly and able to work on own initiative and as part of a team.

Education:

  • Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent, or with comparable relevant experience.

Desirable

Education:

  • First Aid at Work training.
  • Health & Safety in the Work Place, Level 2.
  • COSHH trained.

Knowledge/Experience:

  • Knowledge of, and interest in, catering and hospitality.
  • An interest in the work of the Archbishop’s ministry and the Church of England.
