This is an exciting time in the diocese, with the launch of the vision of a Transforming Church, Transforming Lives in 2016 leading to significant new missional energy in many of our churches, chaplaincies and schools.

Over the past two years we have brought together our diocesan teams into fresh, open plan offices on the University of Surrey Research Park, and embarked on a major review of the services we offer ensuring that Church House Guildford is genuinely providing servant leadership in support of focused activity in our parishes.

As a member of the Mission Enabler Team, you will be instrumental in supporting the delivery of guiding every church through a process of discernment towards a new/renewed vision and Church Development Plan, ready for the Archdeacons biennial Visitation. The Mission Enabler team, made up of posts with particular specialisms (this one being Communities), is then available to act as consultants going forward. We believe this will release faith, energy, hope and resources for church renewal, health and growth.

This role is 0.8 FTE

Consultancy services & Specialism Leadership in the area of Stewardship for the Parishes will take around 75% of the time, whilst work on the ‘Parish Needs Process’ will take approximately 25% of the time.

A summary of the job purpose is as follows;

  • To resource and support parishes in the mission of strategic church leadership and the embedding of Transforming Church, Transforming Lives.
  • To facilitate and support the Parish Needs Process by ensuring that parish priorities are identified, reflected in a well-documented Church Development Plans (CDPs) that clearly articulates anticipated outcomes and the needs (resources and services) to support its implementation.
  • To provide leadership in the specialism of Stewardship for the diocese, and in response to identified needs, to provide consultancy services to parishes on the development and fulfilment of Stewardship plans as allocated by the PCT
  • To further the Growing Faith agenda by ensuring the PNP routinely reviews and considers the opportunities for mission to children and young people by work with local Church and Community Schools (in particular their School Development plans).

  • Educated to degree level, or equivalent
  • Evidence of continuing learning and development, whether through formal course participation or self-directed learning


  • Theological qualification



  • Experience of fund raising or stewardship projects in church
  • Experienced in team leadership at a parish level, as a staff member or volunteer
  • Evidence of ability to have grown people and churches in discipleship and mission through their leadership
  • Experience of building, nurturing and developing teams
  • Experience of leading and facilitating workshops, large and small group sessions


  • Experience of guiding a variety of churches through a mission planning process



  • A knowledge of the Church of England, its organisation and governance structures
  • A good knowledge of Christian teaching on giving and stewardship

Transforming Church, Transforming Lives is the vision of the Diocese of Guildford, launched in September 2016 following a long period of prayer and consultation. It envisages individuals and church communities open to the transforming work of God’s Spirit in their own lives, and so becoming agents of Christ’s transformation to the world around them.

Transforming Church, Transforming Lives is a framework not a blueprint, encouraging a thousand local initiatives to work towards our broader shared goals. It is primarily a strategy for the local church, though many of its principles are being extended to groups of churches, network congregations, chaplaincies and church schools.
