Priest in Charge for the Benefice of Ampthill with Millbrook and Steppingley

This job has now expired

The Bishop of St Albans wishes to appoint a Priest-in-Charge for the United Benefice of Ampthill, Millbrook and Steppingley

Based in and around the historic market town of Ampthill, we look forward to welcoming our new Priest-in-Charge to lead us into the future, following the retirement of our Rector of 23 years.

Our new priest will be working with all three churches in the benefice and will be supported by an experienced lay ministry team, and experienced parish officers and volunteers. He or she will be on a journey with us as we grow in number and in faith, and will be willing and able to nurture the many gifts within our church family, utilising those gifts in the service of God, the church, and the communities around us.

Our Mission Action Plan goals are:

  • To increase opportunities for spiritual development within the core church and wider community
  • To strengthen the link between our churches and communities they serve
  • To facilitate people in the surrounding community to feel part of the church by making ourselves, our buildings and our services, accessible to all.

The ideal candidate will lead worship with enthusiasm, offering insight into scripture, and engaging the congregation.

Our new priest will be able to relate to all ages, be excited about the opportunities that are bought about by new housing in the area, and will be an energetic and visible leader. They will have the skills and desire to draw younger people into the church.

He or she will be willing and able to embrace the challenges of supporting two local churches, along side a larger church in a burgeoning market town, and be able to nurture a strong sense of community and combined church family.

We are praying for someone who will lead us in a growing life of prayer and faith, who will support teaching and understanding of scripture, and who has the ability to inspire, to challenge us, and to encourage us as we grow in faith and in love for Jesus.

He or she will ensure the pastoral needs of church members are supported, will work creatively with the parishes to reach out to the local community and build on existing relationships with local schools.

We are three friendly and welcoming parishes, who are distinct in character, but united in our excitement at working supportively with you, in order to share God's love.

We are in a rural location with excellent links via road, rail or air, with London under an hour away by train. Larger towns and cities nearby include Milton Keynes, Bedford, Cambridge, and Hitchin.

There are plenty of shops, recreation facilities, clubs and organisations within our communities, and a music tradition at the church in Ampthill which supports the smaller churches.

Our new priest will live in a modern detached five bedroom rectory in Ampthill where there is a good sized garden and plenty of off road parking.

More information is contained in the attached parish profile. We have worked collaboratively on this new profile, and have enjoyed the process, celebrating all the wonderful aspects of our benefice, and recognising the challenges that we will need to address with the support of our new priest.

May you hear God's call to us if it is His wish.
