This is an outstanding opportunity to combine urban ministry in Blackpool with a key strategic role across the Diocese of Blackburn. It is a chance for a priest in the Catholic tradition to exercise an important ministry across a Diocese.

As Parish priest of Holy Cross Blackpool, you will be responsible for developing the ministry of a small but extraordinarily committed congregation which serves one of the most deprived communities in the country.

As Priest Missioner, you will work with parishes of all traditions to foster courage and confidence as they seek to grow in line with our diocesan strategy, Vision 2026.

Candidates are invited to apply in any of the following ways;

1. Full time role combining both positions - .5 full time equivalent (fte) 3 days as the Parish priest of Holy Cross and half time as the Priest Missioner to the Diocese of Blackburn.

2. Parish priest of Holy Cross, Half time 3 days per week

or

3. Priest Missioner to the Diocese of Blackburn, Half time

There are two parts to this job, each of which will occupy half of your time.

As Vicar of Holy Cross Blackpool you will:

  • Develop the Catholic and Eucharistic traditions of the parish and bring a freshness of approach to worship and preaching.
  • Build the confidence and faith of the congregation and implement strategies that will contribute to numerical and spiritual growth.
  • Enable the parish to reach out and serve its community by consolidating existing work and seeking out fresh opportunities, for example in local schools.
  • Pay close attention to the administrative and financial health of the parish
  • Work alongside/with the Centre of Mission in Blackpool as part of the outreach work on outer estates

The PCC of Holy Cross has passed resolutions under the House of Bishop’s Declaration and pastoral care is delegated to the Bishop of Burnley.

As Priest Missioner to the Diocese of Blackburn, you will:

  • Work with a selected group of parishes for specific phases of time to support them in implementing strategies for growth.
  • Support parishes in finding ways to connect with people on the fringes of church life
  • Make the most of occasional offices, confirmations and enquirers’ courses, paying particular attention to missing groups and generations
  • Help parishes both to serve more generously and to see the evangelistic dimension of community ministry
  • Work closely with colleagues in the Diocesan Office, particularly with the Being Witnesses team

In this area you will work for the Bishop of Lancaster who oversees the ‘Being Witnesses’ team.

The ideal candidates will:

  • Have experience of growing a local congregation both numerically and spiritually and be able to share the approaches that lay behind this growth.
  • Have excellent relational skills and be able to win the trust of colleagues quickly.
  • Be committed to mutual flourishing and, whilst confident in their own tradition, delight in working with all.
  • Be an able communicator and preacher.
  • Have a disciplined life of prayer and a passionate and well-articulated belief in the power of the Gospel to transform
  • Have the insight to see beyond presenting issues in parishes
  • Be an ordained priest within the Church of England(both roles)
