The Patronage Board (Bishop of Buckingham, CPAS, Robert Dorrien-Smith, Team Vicars, PCC reps) are seeking to appoint a Team Rector and Rector of St Mary’s, who will lead the mission of a large and vibrant Parish, which covers the town of Chesham and 3 surrounding villages.  We are a community of 7 churches with a staff team of 12, who are genuinely passionate about our gospel ministry in the Chesham area, with St Mary’s Church at the centre of that witness for nearly 1000 years. We are seeking a servant-hearted and gifted church leader, who will encourage and empower the Parish staff team, and continue to build on the excellent work of our previous incumbent.

This is an exciting and a challenging role, to lead a team Parish that is varied and complex, but united in a desire to reach out with the good news of Jesus Christ to the town of Chesham and surrounding area.

We are a Parish divided into 5 separate districts, with 7 local churches, and the role of rector is to steer a large ship (total ER of 621) with a light hand on the tiller, allowing the churches to express their distinctive styles, but ensuring that they have a clear gospel focus.  Chesham is a vibrant market town with good links to London, and with a diverse community of people.  It is marked by both significant wealth and by a busy foodbank and a CAP debt centre (both set up by members of the Parish in the last few years).  We have the challenge of reaching out to all the different parts of our community, and the role of the Team Rector is to hold onto the bigger picture and help us not miss out on any particular section of the town.

The primary responsibility of the rector is to lead St Mary’s Church which is the main, historic Parish church and the largest of the churches in Chesham.  St Mary’s has experienced change in its worship patterns in recent years, establishing two morning congregations, and a new evening service, with clear teaching of the Bible at the heart of each.  The wardens and DCC are committed to working with their vicar to see further growth both spiritually and numerically, and have a particular desire to see every member growing and involved more fully in ministry.  St Mary’s is generally regarded as the civic church, which presents opportunities for connecting with the wider community within the town.

Chesham is a growing town, with new housing appearing, and plans for a further large development in the next few years.  The Team Rector will have an important role in deploying resources to see the church establishing a presence and reaching out to the new families and individuals who are moving into the town.  There is currently an interim associate minister in place for 18 months to oversee two of the churches, in order that the new Team Rector will be able to make a long-term Team Vicar appointment.

As vicar of St Mary’s

  • Give oversight to the pastoral care of God’s people
  • Work hard in the faithful and clear teaching of God’s Word
  • Lead the congregation in mission & outreach to the town
  • Manage and equip the church staff team
  • Seek to develop every member ministry in the church
  • Encourage the exploration of vocations for wider ministry

As Team Rector

  • Give leadership of vision for outreach to the whole Parish
  • Lead and develop the Parish staff team
  • Be responsible for deploying resources across the Parish
  • Make occasional visits to the other churches
  • Represent the Parish in the wider community

We believe that the person we are looking for will be:

  • Someone with a humble but sure confidence in their calling and gifts
  • Clear in their commitment to the Bible as God’s Word, and an able teacher
  • Passionate about the gospel, and reaching out to those who are not yet believers
  • A proven leader in ministry, who can support and encourage a staff team
  • Strong in terms of organisational and time management skills
  • Clear in their own convictions, but gracious and generous in working with others

The Parish of Great Chesham provides an exciting and challenging context for gospel ministry, leading a strong staff team, in a vibrant town with great access to London.  We are praying for the Lord to bring to us a minister who would enjoy serving Him in this place, and lead us in the next season of life and ministry.
