CHORAL SCHOLARSHIPS (alto, tenor and bass) 2020-2021

Applications are sought for the above positions, which are ideal for outstanding gap year, undergraduate or post graduate students. However, all applications will be considered equally.

The appointments are from September 2020 to August 2021 with the option of a further year if progress is satisfactory.

The scholarship is worth £3700 p.a. paid by monthly instalments with the extra fees for special services. There is free accommodation near to the cathedral for suitable candidates from outside of Liverpool.

The Choral Scholars will be fully involved in the busy life of the Music Department, under the direction of the Director of Music, Lee Ward and will sing alongside the lay clerks and choristers in the cathedral choir. The department is a friendly and welcoming one and a number of social events are part of the experience.

The choir has an extensive repertoire ranging from music of the renaissance to contemporary works, both in English and Latin, and has made several acclaimed recordings, broadcasts and tours.

Concert work is an important part of the choir’s work and they frequently join with the choir of the Metropolitan Cathedral for concerts and services and also the choirs of Manchester and Chester Cathedrals each year for a joint choral evensong. The cathedral choir supports a termly concert in the cathedral as part of the extensive choral outreach within the city and also gives a termly concert in a Diocesan church. New works are commissioned on a regular basis and there is plenty of challenging music to sing. There is a concert tour each year also. The current Choral Scholars are also members of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and Chamber Choir, with the opportunity to work with the world class RLPO and conductors.

The Choral Scholars are entitled to take holidays, by negotiation with the Director of Music, within choir holiday periods, which are ten days after both Christmas and Easter, six days at each of the three half terms and seven weeks in the summer.

Liverpool is a very active musical centre and there are plenty of opportunities for additional freelance work.
