Rector of Cottingham

This job has now expired

Rector of St Mary the Virgin, Cottingham.

Our vibrant parish, in the western suburbs of Hull, retains a clear sense of being a ‘village’ where the church is ideally placed to be at the heart of our community. We have strong connections with our schools, a healthy Occasional Office ministry, and a historic building which is open and often visited. Our strong choral tradition is also reflected in our hosting of a wide range of musical and cultural events.

We are seeking a priest who will:

  • lead the church forward in mission and deeper engagement with the parish
  • listen carefully to the church and parish and then to offer fresh insights and ideas for shaping the church’s mission and ministry.
  • enable the church to be more effective in how it engages with families and younger adults
  • value and develop the laity, enabling them to serve more effectively
  • welcome all and embrace a wide breadth of Anglican traditions
  • deepen the commitment to prayer and worship
  • ensure pastoral care is offered and available for all in the church.

We are looking for a new Rector (male or female), accepting of the ministry of women priests and bishops, who will work closely with the Diocese and the Deanery, and will

  • Help us to look to the future and build up our common life
  • Be a teacher of the faith and a missionary in the parish, leading spiritual growth
  • Bring new ideas, balance the needs of the existing congregations with the need to bring in more people, young families, children and young people.
  • Make some services child friendly and accessible to young people and newcomers - whilst valuing present patterns of worship and nurturing the existing congregations
  • Appreciate the existing groups and activities and identify strengths and gaps. • Initiate innovative outreach
  • Encourage existing outreach
  • Use the buildings for outreach to the community
  • Support and build up pastoral care.

Unfortunately it is not always straightforward for clergy from overseas to be appointed to posts in the Church of England.  The policy of the UK Border Agency is that normally the organisation making an appointment has been able to prove that it is impossible to appoint a person who is a national of a European Economic Area country, before a visa giving permission to work will be issued to a person who comes from elsewhere.

This appointment is subject to a satisfactory enhanced DBS Check.
