This is a newly configured post which combines the role of Priest-in-Charge (Team Vicar designate) of St Andrew’s Church, Croydon, with the post of Associate Priest at Croydon Minster. The postholder will become Team Vicar (0.5) on the formal establishment of the Croydon Team Ministry and continue as an Associate Priest at the Minster.

A new pastoral scheme is proposed to create a Team Ministry in Croydon Town Centre, embracing Croydon Minster, Croydon St Andrew and Croydon St George. There is provision for a 0.5 post (+housing) for the Croydon St Andrew element of this.

The stipend and on costs for the Associate Minister element of the post are externally sponsored by the Whitgift Foundation. The funding has been secured for three years and will then be subject to a review.

St Andrew’s

The postholder will have responsibility for St Andrew’s Church as a Team Vicar within the Croydon Team Ministry. In that role the postholder will have responsibility for the whole mission of St Andrew’s Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical, and will chair the PCC.

Croydon Minster

In the role of Associate Priest at Croydon Minster the postholder will be accountable to the Incumbent at the Minster and will work with colleagues principally to ensure the delivery of regular services (including Sunday evenings and weekday Choral Evensong) and occasional offices at the Minster as needs arise and that do not clash with previously agreed St Andrew’s services. The postholder will also participate in the weekly Ministry Team meeting and appropriate agreed tasks from that. This element of the post is funded by the John Whitgift Foundation to enable the Team Rector, as Vicar of Croydon, to discharge his historic responsibilities as Chaplain to the Foundation. To that end the post holder will also support the liturgical and pastoral provision within Whitgift Care.

Team Ministry

The postholder will be a member of the College of Priests of the Team Ministry and the wider Ministry Team with Lay Ministers. The postholder will also have responsibility for an agreed area, or areas, of ministry across the Team, working with the colleagues in each Team church within the agreed Team vision and strategy. The first postholder will have the opportunity to engage in the formation and shaping of the Team in its vision and strategy.

The particular focus for the ministry at St Andrew's will need to be determined going forward as part of the local strategic development of the new Team Ministry. Currently there is a focus on expanding the mission and ministry of the Team, working with St Michael and All Angels (the other parish church in the centre of Croydon) to respond creatively and faithfully to the large scale redevelopment of the centre of Croydon.

To meet the opportunities and challenges at St Andrew’s Church, Croydon Minster and the wider Croydon Team Ministry the postholder will be able to demonstrate that they:

  • are comfortable and at home in catholic liturgy (vestments, incense, servers etc) at both churches and also the Anglican choral tradition (at the Minster);
  • have an instinctive sense of working collegially with clergy and lay colleagues;
  • have the ability to gain the confidence of other people in the leadership of transition;
  • have the ability to discern and form new pastoral structures and oversight of lay teams in new areas of mission and ministry, prioritising demands and delegating appropriately;
  • have excellent and patient communication skills with an ability to develop a rapport with people of all ages and backgrounds, and responsive to those who need spiritual support;
  • will be able to work with the congregation of St Andrew’s, particularly the PCC in developing the vision for their community engagement that maximises the opportunities offered by the church and its associate halls;
  • have the stamina, drive and creativity to work with the team in grasping the opportunities and challenges this role provides, including in work with children and young people and in the arts and music.

The parish is rooted in the Catholic tradition of the church and in recent years has returned to being under the oversight of the Bishop of Southwark. The church does not seek to cling to tradition for its own sake but rather to use it as a springboard from which to engage with contemporary culture. Worship (with an attendance of about 40 about 1/3 of which are young people and children) has been focussed on the 10.00am Sunday Mass.
