Our task in the Ministry Division is to renew lay and ordained ministry throughout the Church of England. We do this by providing advice and support to dioceses, the CofE’s Bishops, and numerous Theological Education Institutions.

We oversee the selection, training and deployment of ordained ministers, ensuring the Church is well equipped to serve God in living out its mission for many generations to come.

Resourcing growth in ministry is a major strand of the Renewal and Reform programme throughout the Church of England. Working through the National Ministry Team, the Ministry Council seeks to promote the framework for ministry outlined by the House of Bishops and Archbishops Council.

The Senior Financial Strategist and Programme Manager, will be responsible primarily for the Strategic Ministry Fund which provides grants from funds made available by the Church Commissioners for additional curacies to meet the aspiration to increase the number of those being trained for ordained ministry by 50%.

Alongside this, a major review of theological education and Resourcing Ministerial Education will examine the current funding mechanism for funding the training of Ordinands and the role of Theological Education Institutions (TEIs) in partnership with Ministry Council and the dioceses.

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented Senior Financial Strategist to make a major contribution to the Strategic Ministry Fund project.

You will be providing financial modelling to ensure a fair spread of resources across the dioceses according to need, assisting the Strategic Ministry Board in making grant decisions. Providing support to the Resourcing Ministerial Education (RME) review by providing financial analysis and modelling, you will consult and inform dioceses throughout the process, ensuring that systems are well understood and fit for purpose.

To be successful, you will need the ability to think and plan strategically, when managing complex projects with multiple stakeholders and funding streams. You will have a business or financial qualification at degree level or equivalent and a thorough understanding of business development skills and the ability to implement these skills.

With the motivation to work proactively and flexibly, you will occasionally travel and work outside of normal office hours.

The successful candidate will have the option of working remotely, while being based in London with the central team for a minimum of three days per week.

The Role

  • Sharing in the strategic leadership of Ministry Division as a member of the Senior Management Team
  • Leading on and coordinating the delivery of the Strategic Ministry Fund in the Division and ensuring as the programme manager that key objectives are achieved in a timely fashion
  • Working with other colleagues to develop an application and assessment framework for curacies funded under the Strategic Ministry Fund
  • Supporting the Resourcing Ministerial Education review with financial data and modelling
  • Liaising with key stakeholders in Dioceses and TEIs to communicate and deliver both Strategic Ministry Fund arrangements and any new RME funding arrangements
  • Overseeing the work of Projects and Research Officer including responsibility for HR and PDR
  • Reporting to the Director who will share the wider representational and strategic aspects of financial planning
  • With the Director, reporting to the Finance Panel
  • With the Director, working with the Finance Panel and the Ministry Council to ensure good communication with the College of Bishops
  • Carrying out any other duties as required.

  • A thorough understanding of business development skills and the ability to implement these skills.
  • Able to demonstrate the impact of decision making on stakeholders
  • Ability to think and plan strategically through complex projects with multiple stakeholders and funding streams
  • Energy and drive to work under time pressures and within deadlines
  • Able to work collaboratively within a complex organisational structure
  • Excellent communication skills including oral and written skills.
  • Good IT skills particularly in data management and presentation
  • Experienced and excellent manager of people and committed to their development.
  • A business or financial qualification at degree level or equivalent.

  • Can travel within England and attend meetings away from London.
