The parishes of Goose Green, St Paul, Poolstock St James with St Thomas and Highfield St Matthew are coming together as one parish (Hub) – Wigan West – in a new benefice. This has followed an extensive period of consultation regarding the future of church in Wigan as together they seek to enable one in ten people in Wigan to be on a discipleship journey by 2022.

They are seeking a Hub Leader to bring the three parishes together to serve the local community and lead them forward into a vibrant future. The Hub’s purpose is to resource lay led worship communities through refreshing existing, and planting new, communities.

They are part of a wider movement, Church Wigan, which is seeking to transform the way we approach being worshipping communities in the 21st Century. Church Wigan came out of a Church Commissioners Strategic Development Fund bid with significant money given to explore different ideas. Our overall aim is to create a new form of team ministry that enables a focus on mission and planting new congregations.

The hub will be led by two clergy - the Hub Leader and the Associate Hub Leader who are part of a wider leadership team. This team supports the parish PCC and is accountable to the wider Church Wigan Leadership Team.

Wigan has good bus, train and road links to local towns, and to both Liverpool and Manchester. It is close to the motorway, with the Lake District, North Wales and the Peak District each just over an hour away.

Main Responsibilities

The hub is looking for a priest who will:

  • lead a culture where the making, growing and releasing of disciples is central
  • change the culture of clergy leadership developing a meaningful partnership with the Associate Hub Leader in the context of the Ordinal
  • build and lead a collaborative leadership team to shape and implement local missional strategy
  • work collaboratively with other leaders in Church Wigan
  • define with the parish new patterns for the celebration of the Eucharist and other worship services
  • engage with Head Teachers to develop the relationship with church schools
  • support and be supported by the wider Wigan and diocesan netwroks
  • support the diocesan strategy seeking opportunities to build a bigger church to make a bigger difference.
