Bradford Academy is seeking to recruit a chaplain who may be a lay minister or ordained and is looking for an opportunity to make an impact on the spiritual health of a diverse and vibrant school community.

The Role

The Chaplain will be the ‘Resident Expert’, providing guidance on the scriptures and will have three key areas of school life: spiritual, pastoral and worship. The following descriptions should not be seen as discreet entities, but as closely interrelated, nor are they exhaustive.


The Chaplain will be responsible for a number of aspects of the Academy’s spiritual provision. Specific duties include:

  • Coordination of prayers and assembly. The Chaplain may devise/support the weekly themes to draw in staff and Learners.
  • Mobilises, encourages and supports any groups interested in faith.
  • Provides extra-curricular courses on Christian Belief and/or Bible study for Learners and/or staff as appropriate
  • Connect the Academy with the Diocese and other faiths and organisations.
  • Working closely with the Humanities Department, contributes to the RE curriculum.
  • Co-ordinates and has oversight of charitable projects by the Academy (e.g. Food Bank).
  • Would work closely with bereaved Leaners and their families in the community
  • Making provision for Learners from different faith groups (e.g. Ramadan, Yom Kippur, Diwali, Dharma Day).


The Chaplain will be a member of the Support and Guidance team and have shared responsibility for the pastoral care of Learners. Specific duties include:

  • Membership of the Support and Guidance Team. This group meets weekly to discuss the day-to-day and long-term strategic provision of pastoral care across the community.
  • To hold a caseload of vulnerable learners
  • Available to offer a listening ear to Learners.
  • To meet periodically with the Executive Principal to discuss the welfare of the community, forthcoming services and associated chaplaincy events as well as providing a sounding board as required.


The Chaplain will be responsible for administering, leading and preaching in the Academy’s regular programme of collective worship, as well as occasional services offered for different constituencies within the Academy’s community.

Specific duties include:

  • Organising and developing worship which forms an integral part of the school day such as tutor time worship (the 2 minute silence / thought for the day discussion in classes), year group worship as well as whole school worship.
  • Preaching at or drawing in guest preachers for collective worship.
  • Developing a close working relationship with the Strategic Lead for Music, in order to continue to foster the rich musical programme which enhances our events.
  • Organising and developing occasional services, such as, the School Carol Services, and collective worship for Holy Week, Easter.
  • Developing partnerships with other School Chaplains and offering mutual support to the Chaplain Network.
  • Making connections with other faith leaders in the community
  • Being a custodian for The Sacred Space.


  • The post holder will be expected to report back to the Governing Body from time to time on spiritual matters pertinent to the school.
  • The Chaplain will be fully involved in any SIAMS inspection and ensure best practice.
  • Any other duties reasonably requested by the Executive Principal.


  • The successful applicant must possess a theological qualification such as a degree or diploma.


  • Experience of working with children and young people is desirable.

  • Is a person of prayer, who can offer up the needs of the community.
  • Will commit to their own spiritual development and will link to a Spiritual Director provided by the Diocese.
  • Can articulate and exemplify the spiritual and moral values of the Academy – Known, Valued, Understood and Guided.
  • Can command the respect of Learners and staff, regardless of their religious affiliation.
  • Takes an open, rational and intelligent approach to issues of life and faith.
  • Exemplifies sensitivity, integrity and appropriate confidentiality.
  • Is able to demonstrate tact and diplomacy in delicate situations.
  • Combines gravitas, presence and humour.
  • Can work well under pressure.

Working within Bradford Academy

The post-holder is responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom he or she is responsible, or with whom he or she comes into contact. They must adhere to and ensure compliance with the Academy’s Safeguarding Policies at all times. If in the course of carrying out the duties of the post the post-holder becomes aware of any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of the children in the Academy, they must report any concerns immediately to the Academy’s Safeguarding Team.

Person Specification

Offers of roles at Bradford Academy are dependent upon the applicant’s supporting letter of application, their application form, satisfactory references one of which must be provided by a minister in a member church of Churches Together in England (applicants from churches which have orthodox Trinitarian beliefs and have not become members will need to flag this) and performance over the selection process.

Chaplaincy at Bradford Academy

The chaplaincy is an essential part of the daily life of the Academy and the Chaplain has a central role in delivering and developing its spiritual and pastoral provision. Whilst distinctively Christian, the chaplaincy is fully inclusive of people from all faiths and none, encouraging an open, honest and friendly dialogue, where all views are respected in a spirit of generous hospitality and mutual learning. The Chaplain will play a critical role in maintaining and promoting this ethos. Bradford Academy’s chaplaincy is in the tradition of the Church of England.
