The Church Commissioners manage £8bn of assets, comprising a diversified portfolio of £6bn in equities, alternative assets, private market funds, bonds and cash, and £2bn predominantly directly managed property portfolio including urban and rural real estate, timberland and managed funds in the UK and overseas.

The Investment Team manage the portfolio through multiple external investment management arrangements. This creates a wide range of operational requirements and the need for an extensive set of functional capabilities within the team to support the requirements of the different investment arrangements and provide expert operational management. This is a new role, created to build a strong operations culture, ensure robust ‘first line’ management of operation risk, develop the team and drive change and industry good practice.

The role carries out day to day investment operations activities in support of the fund.

The main responsibilities for this role are;

Transaction and Liquidity Management

  • Maintenance of transaction log used to drive bank cash reconciliation, transactional and forecasting activities.
  • Cash & liquidity forecast report production, including escalation of upcoming liquidity concerns.
  • Providing support for Money Market, Treasury and FX trading.
  • Monitoring and reconciling payments and receipts from third party managers and funds.
  • Payment activities including completion of payment request forms and invoices.
  • Supporting the monthly payments for the hedging overlay program and any derivative related collateral, margin and p&l settlement.

Operational Support for Investment Activity

  • Assist with changes to the Commissioners’ securities portfolio, including account and market set up at the custodian and KYC activities.
  • Monitoring and updating of actions in the project management system.

Oversight of 3rd Parties

  • Assist with operational oversight and service level adherence of the Commissioners’ custody arrangements.
  • Assist with the oversight of SLAs with appointed Investment Managers.

Business Process, Procedures and Risk Management

  • Maintaining a task list for the team that identifies cover arrangements in the event of absence.
  • Assisting with the creation, monitoring and maintenance of risk and control matrices for the team.


  • Provide cross functional cover, subject to appropriate training having been undertaken, with the Performance and Risk Analyst and other functions as required.
  • Maintain access lists for third party portals (eg Intralinks) and the investment operations group email address.
  • Other duties as required.

The ideal candidate should have;


Knowledge and Experience

  • Experience of working in an investment operations function that supports a multi-asset investment fund
  • Experience of a global custodian custody arrangement
  • Operational experience and understanding of a broad range of asset classes
  • Experience of documenting business processes

Skills and Aptitudes

  • Numerate with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong administrative and organisational skills
  • Excellent IT skills (including Excel to advanced standard)
  • Able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to communicate and build and maintain relationships at all levels within the Investment Division
  • Organised and efficient with ability to manage priorities effectively and meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently whilst recognising boundaries of responsibility and accountability


  • Relevant industry qualification preferable, but not essential.


  • Some tasks may occasionally involve working out of normal office hours in order to meet deadlines.
